Question about seeing a therapist
I hope this is on the right board....anyway after many years of very low self esteem and self confidence I feel should see a therapist. As my daughters get older I don't want my issues to become theirs. I already see my 7 year old suffers from both as well. Unfortunately when I need to coach her, I have no idea what to do or say because frankly I can't help myself and it is starting to depress me. So my question really is around what kind of therapist? I have no experience. Psychologist? Psychiatrist? Board Certified? Etc. If you are uncomfortable posting, please PM me.
Thanks!

Re: Question about seeing a therapist
A psychiatrist generally only sees patients for medication management. (Sometimes even psychiatric nurse practitioners stand in for this role).
You could go with either a licensed social worker or a psychologist.
They would provide the therapy and monitor your moods weekly or how ever often you meet with them.

Re: Question about seeing a therapist
I want to a therapist for similar reasons before I had children. It can absolutely help! Look for someone who is local and in your insurance plan. They should have a description of what they do.

Re: Question about seeing a therapist
It may take a few times before you find the right fit. You have to be comfortable with your therapist or there is no point in going. Hope that helps.

Question about seeing a therapist
I think you can see either.
I have a loved one going every two weeks to a Psychiatrist after becoming extremely depressed. This has made an enormous difference in a good way.
I also have a cousin who is seeing a therapist every two weeks for low self esteem issues. She also sees a psychiatrist in the same office once a month to see how she is doing and to keep an eye on her medications.

Question about seeing a therapist
As someone else posted a pychiatrist just prescribes medication. A social worker is good but i personally like talking to them. They do not have a phd anf i felt like i was simply talking to a friend. I tried 2 different ones and had a similar experience both times. I didnt feel they offered me any insight into my behavior (def have self esteem issues but also anxiwty) nor did they offer me ways to manage my feelings. I found the best help from a psychotherapist/psychologist. Board certified and with phd. I was seeing 1 for many years who changed my life and had to change when i moved. I found another local woman who is absolutely amazing and has also changed my life. It has made a world of a difference in my life.

Thank you BlessedMomma for sharing the positive impact it has had on your life. It gives me hope that I can change. My DH is so confused about me wanting to do this. He sees me as a happy easy going person, but I really struggle and work hard to seem that way.
