Re: Just got a call from my DD's science teacher

maybe she was concerned that your DD would read the note before you did and wanted to take her out of the equation?

or she had some free time during a break (gym or whatever) and just wanted to deal with it immediately?

I think the calls were overkill to be honest. Does the classroom teacher have a behavior/reward system in place? Our first grade classes do. If not, maybe you can ask to implement that.

As a side note, I'm impressed your district has a science teacher for 1st grade!

As a teacher, I make calls the first and second week. I teach middle school, so it is admittedly different but it is important to establish procedures and appropriate behavior from the start. She should have waited until she could get in touch with you though, IMO. Leaving a message like that wasn't the best way to open a line of communication with a parent.

I don't see anything wrong with the calls. Notes get ignored many times.

I really am fine with teachers calling me, no problem with it at all (well , maybe not the first coupe of weeks of first grade) but I think she should have asked me to call her back so she could talk to me , instead of leaving VM for both me and DH. She sounds so annoyed and almost angry , I say this because she doesn't normally sound like this, I have met her couple of times.

I think she needs to calm down, she sounds very dramatic. I would be annoyed with the teacher TBH. Unless it's an emergency, both parents do not need to be called and left a message like that

Is she new? It sounds like she is trying to come on strong and meaning business in the beginning. I would call her back and ask a bunch of questions. Id want to know who she was talking to, was she separated from the person she was talking to, and what are the consequences bc sitting on the rug doesn't sound like it was working.I think calling is better than sending a note because notes get lost.

As a teacher, it can be really tough to get people on the phone when most of your day you can't get to a phone. I have no problem leaving info on a vm because the alternative is sometimes days of phone tag or no call back at all. I taught hs so first grade is obviously a different story but I would guess she was just trying to nip it in the bud since the issue was ongoing.

I think it was likely the result of having to discipline her more than four times by sending her to the rug. I would have expected a note too, but perhaps it was more than just talking? I think the other moms here gave you good advice. Hugs for you.

Re: Just got a call from my DD's science teacher

She may have called because she is not the classroom teacher and thought it more effective to call you than to pass a note to the teacher to send home.

Your daughter also may have really caused a Disruption to the class and she felt it warranted a call

I'm a teacher and I prefer making calls over notes. I'm just better at speaking than writing. I don't see why this is a big deal. Speak to your daughter and hopefully it doesn't happen again.

I see it as "I can't handle your child , I'm frustrated with her (on the 2nd week of school, first science lesson) and I'm calling you"
That's my honest opinion if you want the truth.
I did talk to my daughter , she said she was asking questions and the teacher "got angry at her for asking too many questions"
When I asked her if she was talking to her friends she said "no, I was talking to my teacher, asking her questions but she didn't want to answer, she told me to sit on a rug"
My daughter is in G& T class , she is very smart, communicates very well, she is not the type to make something up or lie and she LOVES science, it's her favorite subject of all, she does experiments and such every single weekend with DH, they read science books few times a week, she is just very much into it so I believe her when she tells me she got punished for asking too many questions.
Was she maybe asking questions while the teacher was still talking? Yes, very possible.
Should she have been doing so? No.
Does that warrant a punishment and a call to a parent? NO
Again JMO .

To me a call means it happened often enough that today was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I'd be happy for the phone call. DC on the other hand, would not be.

If your child's story does not match up with the teacher's story, I would definitely call and follow up. However, I feel completely the opposite (as a teacher and as a parent) and would have welcomed a phone call and I think you are looking too much into the teacher's message. Just as a parent of a K student, I have had some questions/concerns and would really like a teacher to contact and to speak to, so that we can have a back and forth conversation. In letters, I feel that it is difficult to conversate, and sometimes, one message leads to another. For example, I had a 6 time back and forth email conversation with a parent today about something simple that could have taken 5 seconds on the phone. It takes much more time out of my day to email/write a note, than to call. Also, from my conversations with other parents in the district I live in, the teachers prefer to call, rather than to email/write because they do not want a record sometimes of the conversation. The school I teach in is the opposite and prefers everything in writing.

In addition, with new APPR guidelines, teachers really need to increase parent communication. Maybe that was something she was lacking on last year and has begun to make more effort to communicating.

With that said, I do think 4 calls/messages was overkill. Sometimes, if a parent is not answering, I call one other number. However, most times, I just leave a message with a good time to contact me back.

If I were you, I would contact the teacher back to further explain the story and match both stories up. Hopefully, this doesn't happen again!

She didn't say call me if you have questions, or anything. Just left the VM. Same on DH's phone, she actually called DH 2x and then left a VM the 3rd time. He just walked in and told me this.

Calling that many times is strange but I would take it more as she was trying to get one of you on the phone so she didn't have to leave a message. Being that it's a Friday she may have just wanted to address it rather than wait until after the weekend. I would believe your daughter but definitely follow up with the teacher. Maybe it was the way she was asking the questions that was disruptive. Sometimes kids get excited and have a hard time realizing that a lesson is not all about them. It can be very frustrating as a teacher when a student starts to take control of the direction of a lesson. Of course it's the teacher's job to keep things on track and handle the student's input but she may have wanted to explain what happened so that you can address it with your daughter. I would give them both the benefit of the doubt until you hear both sides.

I agree. And if she sent her to the rug 4x, she probably has a system in place. For example, if students are in trouble once the typically get a warning, twice- separate from the class, three times- a note home, 4x in forty-five minutes would be a phone call. If the teacher warned your daughter that she would get a phone call then she has to follow through.

As a teacher I hate taking time out of my day to make phone calls. I do not have free moments, but if a kid deserves a phone call than that is what I need to do. I'm impressed that a prep teacher would actually call. I know many who would expect the classroom teacher to take care of it. And if I got that call I'd be annoyed with my child.

JMOH as a teacher. But I definitely agree that she should not have left that kind of message. I never leave a message with specifics unless a parent has instructed me to.

As a parent I would take the phone call very seriously.

As a teacher we never write notes at my school. It's usually an email home, a call if it is more serious. But we usually email.

Re: Just got a call from my DD's science teacher

I'm a teacher (although I'm hs) and I wouldn't leave that type of message on the phone. Especially negative. In my education classes (both grad and undergrad) I was always taught not to start off the school year with something negative. Even if there is an issue, who wants the first phone call home to be something about their child is doing wrong? I'd rather speak to the teacher, have her introduce herself, talk a little bit about her policies, expectations, etc. and then discuss the talking issue.
