Stony Brook Midwives
I have heard good things about them. I am definitely leaving my current ob/gyn and am thinking of switching to their practice. Couple questions...
--do they take insurance? I have Empire/NYSHIP.
--do they have evening appts, like 6:00 or later?
--how often do you go for appts and sonos?
Any other info is appreciated...or if you have another Dr. that you recommend that delivers at Stony Brook, please share.
TIA!!

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
I have used them with my first pregnancy two years ago and am using them again with my current pregnancy, so I hope I can help! I had an overall great experience with the practice. I went to the office on Belle Meade Rd in Setauket, and they do have some evening appointments--usually I go in the mornings, but my next one is scheduled for 6:15 pm. Probably easiest to call the office to check directly; it may be they do evening hours one or two days a week.
Insurance--I also have Empire/NYSHIP and everything is covered. With my plan I don't pay any co-pays for the midwife visits but sonograms are $20. Any lab work (glucose test, blood draws etc) will have a copay as well, but usually those are pretty low-cost (less than $20).
Appointments--this one is pretty variable depending on your health and how everything is going, but usually they do your first appointment around 6 weeks, then every 4 weeks after that until 8 months or so. Then you will have one every 2 weeks, and finally every week for the last month or so. I don't remember exactly, sorry! I like that (for my last pregnancy, at least) they do not check on your cervix to see how dilated you are until you are in labor at the hospital. Everything I have read seems to indicate it doesn't really mean anything to be 1 cm dilated (for example) and people tend to stress out about that near the due date, so I was happy to avoid that.
Sonograms--they did one at the first visit (6-7 weeks), one at 12 weeks, an optional early anatomy scan at 16 weeks, the normal anatomy scan at 20 weeks, and the last one was around 37 weeks.
Like I said, I was happy with the practice. I liked that you can have the laid-back, supportive care of the midwives but still have close access to the OBs in case there are any complications. And delivering at Stony Brook was great! Hope that helps =)

I also used the midwives for my last pregnancy (2011) and am currently seeing them for this one. I had a slightly different experience though compared to the previous poster. 1st appointment wasn't until 8 weeks and I never had an option for an early sono at 16 weeks (only at 20 weeks). I also never had a sono at 37 weeks. I go to the East Setauket office, but I have gone to the Bohemia office once and it was very nice. I love the midwives and am excited for them to deliver baby #2!

I used them in 2011 when I was pregnant wit DS and had a great experience. At the East Setauket office, they have evening hours on Tues and Weds. I had no trouble getting evening appointments.
As far as sonos, the 12week NT scan was optional, but I had it done. The next one was at 20 weeks - the full anatomy scan. After that, you may not have any sonos. They were unsure of my baby's position so I had one at ~36/37 weeks to make sure head was down.
If you are low-risk, they are a great practice!!

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
Thank you all so much! So helpful.
I spoke with them today and I think I am going to go to the Meet the Midwives next week. They said Bohemia doesn't have night appts. (which is closer to our house) but E. Setauket goes until 8 pm two nights a week, which will be great for my husband. I told him he didn't have to come to EVERY appt. but he said, "well what if I want to? I want the option to be there every time" I love that he's as excited as I am.
I just want to fast forward the next few weeks until my first appt. I hate waiting
