What are some volunteer opportunities for a four year old?
The thread about the homeless students got me thinking. What could I do with ds to sort of introduce the idea of community service/ volunteer work? Obviously something simple he could easily understand, like feeding people who don't have food, giving clothes, etc.

Re: What are some volunteer opportunities for a four year old?
We arent in LI anymore, but we go to nursing homes and the kids can color and give the picts to the residents. A lot of them dont have family that visit very often, so just having the kids there near them even if they arent interacting is a real up-lifter and makes their day.
Dog walking at the SPCA.
Cleaning out old toys/books and taking to a donation center.
My kids are 6 and 3. :)

Re: What are some volunteer opportunities for a four year old?
At Xmas and bdays my kids clear out toys to donate to a shelter.
When we go food shopping we pick up extra cans/non perishables to donate each Sunday to a bin that goes to the INN.

I'm curious about this too! I'd love some more ideas. My Dd is only 2, but I definitely want to introduce this concept to her when she gets a little older!

"Birthday in a bag": Have him ask friends/family to donate cake mixes, canned icing, candles and paper goods for a birthday party. Bag them up and donate to shelters or food pantries.
Also, some places will let you bring your kids along for things like food drives outside of grocery stores or to collect goods at events (LI Cares is a good place to look for opportunities.
Have him do a lemonade stand and have him donate the money or use the money to purchase things to donate.

What are some volunteer opportunities for a four year old?
The Ronald Mc Donald House is always looking for volunteers, though I don't know if they accept anyone that young or if anyone that young can be there since the place is for sick kids.

My church has "PB&J Gang" once a month... bring a bunch of loaves of bread and make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless shelters. My 13 year old son started going and now the whole family does it. My four year old needs help but I think she understands what she's doing. It's at St Joseph's in Babylon.

Contact Birthday Wishes of Long Island. They throw birthday parties for children living in homeless shelters and they ask for volunteers to do Birthdays in a Box.
I had the opportunity to volunteer at a shelter where they threw a birthday party and the kids enjoyed it so much.

I was just going to suggest this. My 6 year old and I made up a birthday box. She had a lot of fun picking out the stuff to go in it, and felt good about giving to someone that might otherwise not have a birthday party.
Regarding Ronald Mcdonald House. They don't house sick kids there, just the families. They have a kids in the kitchen program where you go in and bake a dessert for the families. Their kitchen was under remodel, but might be up and running now. The info is on their site.
