Is Disney with a one-year-old a bad idea?

We're going to Florida in two weeks with our DD, who will have just turned 1. We'll be at my parents house, which is a little over an hour from Disney. I wasn't planning on bringing DD to Disney until she's much older and at that point we'll stay at Disney and do the whole thing... but I'm wondering since we'll be so close and we have free time, if it would be fun to spend a day there. I've been there a thousand times, but that was in my pre-mom days, I can't remember if there is enough for her to experience to make it worth it. All I'm coming up with is It's a Small World!

Thoughts?

We went with DD when she was 1 and she had a great time. DS had a BLAST at 2. Its a small world was a hit, as was the carousel, jungle ride & Dumbo. The parades & shows were fun too.

Was it "worth" the $$...

For your 1 year old, it may not be worth it... but if you enjoy it & are OK spending the $200 for a day there, why not?

Re: Is Disney with a one-year-old a bad idea?

We went with our 1yo to all parks, just at Magic Kingdom we did:

Small World
Winnie
Teacups
Dumbo
Aladdin
Tiki Room
Haunted Mansion
new Ariel ride
I'm sure there were others

There was a ton to do - shows, parades, character meets, and whatnot. She loved the shows and parades.

DH and I are huge Disney fans so we made it enjoyable for her too, kwim?

I'd do it, but that's just me.

eta: The carousel was her fave, she loved it, kept wanting to go on. Granted I think she was a little older, we went in Sep so she was around 15 months...

I think 1 is a bit young. We went when my now four year old daughter was 2 and then when she was 3. I think the best age was at 3.

I took ds at just over 10 months. He loved it. The look on his face was priceless. He was free so it wasn't a waste IMO.

If you are a disney fan then go for it.. We took DS at 5 months and even though he was young, he was aware of his surroundings.. I have tons of beautiful pictures and memories of seeing him there.. Took him back at 2 and it was even better... We are going again next week. He is now 4.. There is a lot to do with them and a lot to see....

I don't think it's a waste at all. They are free at that age anyway. If YOU like Disney, and want to share the experience with your child, go for it. I took my DD at 1, and my nieces have both been at 1 and had an absolute blast. Depends on the child though.

We took DS at 15 mos and he had an amazing time, I don't think its a waste at all. You don't pay for them to enter the park anyway.

We just went with DS and he was 7.5months. We had a great time!! He loved seeing the characters and he was in awe of the parades. We took him on a bunch of rides... It's a Small World, Little Mermaid, the Carousel, Jungle Cruise, Tiki Room, Nemo's Undersea Adventure, Spaceship Earth... I can't remember the others... Sure we needed to tote around a bunch of extra stuff with us but I wouldn't trade the memories for anything!!

I think those who say it is a waste don't really know the MK. There are only about 4-5 rides (splash, space, big thunder, stitch and great goofini) that have height requirements. Everything else can be enjoyed by an infant. So a 1year old has a lot they can do -most of the park. My girls 1st trips were at 15 months and 12 months. They loved it. Huge smiles, clapping and dancing on rides. It was so much fun watching their reactions. You might want to skip characters if you think they will be scared. But the parades are good...see the characters but not get too close.

The only reason why I would say its a waste is they wont remember it. Thata a lot of money on a trip they wont remember which its supposed to be about them. And yes they may react to it wonderfully and there will be great pics I just personally feel I am going to wait to do that until my daughter is about 3-4 years old so she will remember it. Thats just my opinion. I know she would love it but Im gonna do something closer to home for her next summer like sesame place.

Re: Is Disney with a one-year-old a bad idea?

I wouldn't necessarily plan a trip to Disney for a 1 year old, but if you're already in Florida and only an hour away, then I say definitely go! We go to our timeshare in Florida twice a year. We go more for our resort then the parks. Fact we never do more then one day in a park on each trip. That said, we took older DS for the first time when he was 10 months, but we did Seaworld. His first time at Disney he was 18 months. My younger DS went to Disney for the first time at 6 months. We took friends to Florida with us his past June. Their dd was 11 months.

Re: Is Disney with a one-year-old a bad idea?

I really don't see the harm in making a stop at Disney since you are already in the area. Both my kids went young, for different reasons, but both had a great time. It will also be the cheapest Disney trip you will ever take. They are free to get into the park and they can eat off your plate. Regardless of whether or not they will remember it, YOU will never forget how they react to being there. I still remember my kids trying to 'eat' Mickey's nose or my son almost falling asleep on Pooh's lap. They won't do those things when they are older. Go for it!

For a day trip since you are there I think it's nice. You can also try to plan a character meal. but I wouldn't recommend a whole trip at that age.

Re: Is Disney with a one-year-old a bad idea?

DS#2 went to Disney when he was exactly 1, almost 2 and again when he was 2.5. He had a blast every time we went. That being said, we would not have taken him before 2 if he were our only child. He only went because his older brother was 3+.

Some people even say 3 is too young. I don't think 3 is too young but 1 is. He would have an equally good time just going to a local aquarium, children's museum, etc.

eta: I would only go if you guys want to go to Disney. don't do it for the 1yo. DH and I are not Disney people so we personally would not want to go if it weren't for the kids. I know there are other adults out there who love Disney even if they don't have kids.

I think it is fine with a 1 year old, it is just not something I would do in one day unless you can get there at rope drop.

A birthday party doesnt cost as much as a trip to disney. And how do you compare a birthday to a vaca which not all families can afford? Chat Icon

Love this answer!

If you're there anyway and if you were pre-baby and may have gone anyhow, I see no waste in it at all.

Under 3 is free so there's no 'waste'

If you enjoy Disney share it. Come back again later as well.

If YOU didn't like Disney, I'd say skip it. But since you enjoy it, I think she will enjoy it too. And since it's just one day, I think it's a great opportunity for you to go.
