Is it really worth getting a lawyer? I would just plead not guilty and go to court, plead it down to a lesser. I'm sorry that happened, I hope it works out for you.
This! A lawyer will cost you more than the ticket. And its your word -vs- his. Pay it.
Do not just pay it. Plead not guilty and go to court. Whether you hire a lawyer or not, you can plead it down for less points, at the ver least.

I hired a lawyer for about $400 to plead a speeding ticket (82 in a 55) down to a parking ticket. No points. My insurance company never knew about it.
Maybe I could've gotten it down myself but I didn't want to risk it on my insurance.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe when you have points on your license you have to pay a fee every year to the state till they come off.
Also...did you get the Supporting Deposition with the ticket? If not. Request it. If you don't get by the time you go to court. It gets thrown out.
If you go to court and think you could do better with a lawyer, you can always ask for an adjournment to hire one. They won't give you a problem about one adjournment.
Re supporting depositions-- it used to be that the TVB did not entertain this kind of motion (not sure how they didn't?? Maybe b/c it is an administrative agency?). Not sure if that has changed. In other jurisdictions, however, you request a SD, and if they haven't served it within 30 days, you move to dismiss and the case is thrown out. Not sure if that is applicable in Suffolk though. Also, they may have supplied it already, at the same time as the ticket.

It is applicable in Suffolk. DH got his ticket thrown out because it wasn't given at the time and wasn't received within 30 days.
They usually do give it at the time of the ticket. Him and a few others got lucky that day. Probably all the same cop

OK, in that case, and if you didn't already get the SD, I definitely would second requesting it. If you already sent in the not guilty ticket, you can always request it by letter. Keep track of the date (send it return receipt requested) for proof, and if you don't receive it within 30 days, write a letter to the court asking that it be dismissed.

Advice needed - regarding a speeding ticket when I really wasn't going as fast as police said!!!
I got a ticket upstate, and on the back of the ticket it said something like "Please note that not recieving a supporting deposition does not automatically consider this ticket null and void."
I thought - ah-ha, they're getting smart.

Hire a lawyer. I am dealing with the same thing. Google Matthew Weiss.

I got a ticket for going 72 in a construction zone while there was NO construction going on. I plead not guilty and went to court. The judge did NOTHING. I paid the fine plus that $300 assessment fee or whatever it is and the 6 points were put on my license. Luckily it was my only ticket. If you're really concerned about it call a lawyer and see what it will cost you and what they think they can do. Good luck!

Before Suffolk County had the new traffic violations bureau, there were ZERO pleas in Suffolk County. You were either guilty or not - no lesser charges. I don't know what the TVB is doing now.
For a ticket that much over the speed limit, I would absolutely get a lawyer. You will be charged with 6-8 points. Your insurance will go DRASTICALLY. In addition, you will have to pay the special assessment to the DMV for the next 3 years.
For a smaller ticket, I would agree that a lawyer is a waste, but not for one this big.

DO NOT DO THIS!!!!
Yes, it IS worth getting an attorney. I didn't for a speeding ticket once and I should have gotten one. In the end I wound up getting an attorney and YES YES YES it was WELL worth it.
The system isn't all "Plea it down" now, and if it is it's only when you've got representation.

Re: Advice needed - regarding a speeding ticket when I really wasn't going as fast as police said!!!
I just got a ticket, my first and I also was not speeding more than possibly 5 mph over, and only because the school zone I had just gone through a mile back was 25 instead of 20 like this one. I did not receive the supporting deposition so I requested it. It came within a few days but it has an error. It says I was doing 41 in a posted 41 mph school zone. Should I bring that up in court that it's incorrect? Would it help? I pleaded not guilty. I have never had a ticket before.

. Exactly ! Please get a lawyer. The few hundred you spend on a lawyer will be less than the huge increase in your insurance costs.
