Baby won't take bottle

Hello. I hope someone can help me. My 9w old won't take the bottle and I am going back to work in two weeks. I have tried breastmilk and formulas. Tried having other people feeding her. Tried five different bottles. I am worried for her and the people at the daycare that may have to deal with her. Anybody have other suggestions?

Did you try the breastflow bottle by the First Years? A friend of mine had the same exact issue and that is the only bottle her baby would take.

Did you try a different nipple? My oldest was tongue tied, and couldn't drink from certain types of nipples.

Yes that is the newist bottle. My brother tried to give it to her today with formula she screamed when she saw it and refused.I gave in and fed her myself. I will try breast milk next time in the bottle. Thanks. The problem is she eats on average every 2/3 hr so not much time to pump.

Have you tried leaving the house while someone else tries to feed her?

This is very common with BF babies. I would just keep at it. If necessary whoever is watching her can feed her with a dropper or spoon.

I have not left house recently but yes i have in past. This not taking the bottle seems to be a recent thing. I use to give her a bottle about every other day but I got mastitis and my dr told me I had to feed her myself and not to pump or supplement. We think that's why she won't take it now. I always give in and breast feed her, i hate to see her in pain. I hope daycare can help us.

I was going to suggest this as well. It sounds crazy but I swear they can smell mommy. And if mommy is nearby, they will refuse the other options. Try not to stress too much. I've seen this happen with other babies at DS's daycare and it is an adjustment for a few days but eventually it works out just fine. Chat Icon

Go cold turkey.

Baby won't starve to death.

I introduced bottles with kids from day 1 to avoid this... but my sister didn't take that advice. She had same issue with her kid as you are having, bought multiple bottles. Only thing that worked was NOT breast feeding when baby refuses bottle.

First sorry your going through this. But def dont give in just keep ttying the bottle. And i would let someone else give bottle and i would leave. Do this consistently. She will adapt. She wont starve. Dont give in.

Have your tried playtex nursers? Thats the only bottle yhst workef ftom dd and ny peds told me is one of the best transition bottles.

Thanks. My husband travels during week, i am alone most of the time so i have to be the one during week giving it to her. Others helping sorry to say are not helping me because they, just like me, they hate to see her cry/whail. I will keep trying. Do you think I need to try every feeding? I dont have a schedule for her just that feeding is on average every two/three hrs I don't have enough BM to pump.
Btw do you think I should be letting her fall asleep by herself? Too early to let her cry it out?

Are you going back to work full time?

And putting her in daycare?

She is going to be scheduled & need to sleep without boob (either by you or by the daycare).

Personally, I'd do it at home with her every meal that you will me away during your work hours.

If you will be pumping for her at work, pump at home... but if you can't, do formula.

As for sleep... she's going to be put in cribs for sleep... so I'd start there. Contact the daycare & ask how they do naps.

It's a bit of a hard transition... but tons of babies survive this (including my DS who wouldn't eat the first day I went to work until well into the afternoon... he's alive & well).

I don't have a solution bc my DD never took a bottle, but I would definitely try with Breastmilk and not formula. Formula tastes nothing like Breastmilk (taste them yourself and you'll see). So she may need to adjust to a bottle with a familiar taste And once she has the bottle down, then transition to formula if you want to.

Good luck! Chat Icon (I agree w/ PP that she won't starve, she will eventually get it!!)

My daughter wouldn't take a bottle but it turned out it was the formula. She hates it. I was actually advised not to switch up bottles too, stick with one type so she gets used to it and not have to relearn each one. You may have to try to increase your supply and pump and slowly mix in formula when you transition.

Also, daycare is a different environment so while she won't take the bottle from you, she'll likely take it from her teacher there. I'm the kind to not stress out about it now and just nurse because she'll get used to it real quick at daycare. Try a couple half days at first to ease her into it.

Yes full time. Plan on pumping as much as I can at work. She will be at daycare from 8:15-5:15. That's a long day Chat Icon

Do you think breast milk could go bad after a few hrs in fridge? Sometimes she will play w the bottle (gum it) and some milk will come out and she winces. Is that normal?

I was thinking the same thing. Switching bottlesm may be confusing her but wasn't sure. I really hope daycare can handel her.
Heard trick about mixing but want her on bottle first.
Also was thinking that daycare dosent smell like me so it may work there.

How early can/ would you put her on sipie cup? Heard some babies go straight to that. I think but could be wrong that 9w is too early.
But Another worry is was told that by sucking babies are developing their brains. If she goes straight to cup/spoon/dropper she will be missing out. Please tell me if I am being too paranoid. Won't take passie either.

Baby won't take bottle

My dd never took a paci.
9 weeks is too early for sippy cup. Ive never personally heard of a baby never taking a bottle that just may be your anxiety.
She will get the bottle but you have to keep trying and keep trying the same one. Since she is not getting it consistently and not the same one she cant get used to it.

Breast milk doesnt go bad in the fridge after a few hours. But once its out and her mouth has touched it you can only keep it a few hours if im not mistaken. But its been way over a year since i breastfed so dont quote me...
I know this is really hard and scary i was totally freaked out when my dd had a hard time transitioning. Plus i just didnt know what i was doing andthat was scary enough.

Babies are creatures of habit and routine. Its just your job to create those. It takes some time but if you keep doing the same thing the baby will get it.

Re: Baby won't take bottle

I was in your exact shoes this summer, trying to give my son a bottle knowing I had to go back to work in September. I researched, asked for advice, cried.. just know that she will eventually take it. I also couldn't bear to see him cry so I transitioned slowly, replacing only one feeding a day. I know pumping is a PIA but try just pumping once a day and offering the breast milk in a bottle. She will definitely take it quicker than formula. Also, try to be consistent with the type of bottle you use. I found that with my son it was more confusing to him when I was constantly jamming different bottles in his face. See which one she "hates the least" and stick to it. My son (although I hate these bottles) likes the playtex drop-in nursers. The nipple is closest to a breast in that its latex and not silicone and squooshy and soft. After being consistent and offering it to him at least once a day he eventually gave in and took it and now guzzles down milk like a champ. Don't worry, she will too!

Did you try heating the milk slighlty? My friend had this problem and once she heated the milk the baby would drink it from the bottle.

I've been through this with two of my three kids. They both screamed and refused bottle before I went back to work. First day back was hard on them but they got enough. Second day back, no issues. By the end of the first week they would happily swap back and forth. Now my youngest (who was extremely resistant to the bottle) kicks in excitement when she sees the bottle and still loves nursing when I'm home. Don't stress it.
