Re: Walmart To Give Workers Turkey Dinner
Posted by MrsProfessor
That's a nice gesture, especially since a lot of Wal-Mart employees would have difficulty paying for a nice Thanksgiving meal on their own.
My thoughts exactly.

Walmart To Give Workers Turkey Dinner
If you take medical and law out of it is it essential for the gas station to be open? I bet those employees would like a turkey dinner. What about the air service? Pilots, flight attendants, people who work at the airports? Is it essential to buy an egg McMuffin on Thanksgiving at Ohare? Ye sit sucks that retail is now open on Thanksgiving, but they aren't the only people working. It's a new thing and people are upset I get it but it's not the end of the world.

ITA! How about offering them benefits or full time instead?

The sad thing is, even at full time a lot of their employees still need food stamps and/or Medicaid. People shop there to save money but taxpayers subsidize their employees because Walmart doesn't pay a living wage.

Walmart is hardly the only company that doesn't pay a living wage. Daycare workers, fast food workers, etc. etc. etc.

Yep. It's so incredibly sad. How could Walmart have the highest amount of employees receiving welfare. Its not like they don't have the money to pay them. It's just so disgusting.

Exactly. The supermarket has been open forever on Thanksgiving. No one complains though because they need to pick of last minute things right? We could say that their lack of planning doesn't mean the store should be open right?

There are hospital workers, law enforcement....many people have to work on Thanksgiving. Why does everyone freak out if retailers are open? People are getting holiday pay and a dinner. Most people need it. Jmo
OMG are you serious!? My DH is a retail manager he does NOT get overtime or holiday pay and doesn't get to pick whether he works or not...he has to end of story. Police, nurses, doctors, etc are ESSENTIAL workers. Getting a deal on a flat screen is not essential.
Exactly!!!
I've worked in "essential" positions and most employees get holiday pay. I've also worked in retail and got NOTHING extra- no holiday, no overtime, nothing. I don't know why you assume retail stores give holiday pay, because most don't!!!!!!!!!!! They are 2 very different things IMO. How can you even compare?!?!
I have no sympathy, im sorry, i just dont. In this day if you have a job, a warm home and you can afford a turkey...you should be thankful just for that. I'm honestly tired of seeing so many posts full of people whining about working holidays in retail. My dh works every day 24 hrs a day. We travel with a laptop everywhere we go along with his work phone. I rarely hear him complain...We are just happy to have a job. Retail workers aren't the only people who have to work. Gas stations, fast food, food markets, travel, hotels.....
To clear up Walmart not paying living wages...Walmart pays almost 9$ an hour starting day shifts and almost 11$ an hour evening shifts. Walmart also pays time and half on Sundays and double time for holidays! They also offer a great Cadillac benefit plan. They offer more money per hour then BJs! Kohls, waldbaums and shoprite!
The fact they they are offering a turkey dinner is amazing. Since I know for a fact that there are many people who simply couldn't afford a turkey anyway. Happy thanksgiving

They don't have to pay them more because a job as a cashier or gas attendant or fast food server doesn't require any special skill that demands paying them more than they do. They can easily hire some HS kid to do the same job and work for minimum wage and they'll be thrilled. There is also no shortage of people to work these types of jobs and they know that, so your worth at say a Walmart or other retail establishment is minimal. You don't like it, leave and there will be someone right behind you willing to take your place. It's just how it goes.
I honestly don't know why this surprises anyone. Shit jobs have shit pay, shit hours, and shit benefits. A job which requires a more specialized skill, knowledge, expertise, and education is where the money and benefits are in the work force.

Don't they typically close in the early afternoon so employees can go home to their families? I don't recall ever seeing a supermarket open past 3pm. But then again, I have never been to a supermarket or any other store on Thanksgiving.

When I worked at King Kullen in high school/college they were open until 2pm. It was always crazy busy until about noon. I just moved to NOLA and saw yesterday that Winn Dixie is open until 4pm here. I was shocked they were open so late.

If Walmart is such an amazing employer, why are their employees walking out and staging protests around the country? It's public knowledge that they give their employee's the shaft.

Not for nothing, but the whole "WalMart is such a bad employer" is so grossly exaggerated.
Walmart is the largest employer in the US, and they employ over FOUR TIMES as many people as the second largest employer.
For the two million employees they have, I would say the percentage of people "walking out" and "staging protests" is minute.
I am sure I can find plenty other companies that are FAR WORSE that have a much higher percentage of disgruntled employees.

I get your point but holidays should be family time. There should be some respect PERIOD. Thanksgiving is one of those days that there should be respect. If you live in the US then unless you are an essential employee this should be a family day! I know I personally do not shop and will not shop any retailer open on that day!

Exactly. I am a nurse and I have worked my fair share of holidays. Although it's hard sometimes to not be with family on those days, that's what I signed up for when I became a nurse. Patients need care 24/7 265.
Walmart, etc do NOT need to be open on Thanksgiving. Although there will be people who would sign up to work, I have not yet seen anywhere that there is a large financial incentive for people to work the holiday. Rather, I have seen more people come out and say that their employer basically told them work the holiday or you don't have a job.

Don't people on welfare need to work to keep the money? I know my mom had to work at Mcds years ago & she was grateful cause she need the job to keep the money to support us and was happy they hired her.
Remember when you have know credentials & had a tough paper route, sometimes you are grateful for places like this. People in my neighborhood were excited when they built a Walmart and Applebee's because it offered jobs to many. I was happy because it was so convenient lol

Happy thanksgiving the fact of the matter is that I WOULDNT be able to afford anything on retail salary!!!!!!!!! What do you think they pay their employees?!? I hardly think $9 an hour is enough to cover the bills!!!!! Is this a joke?!?! Retail pays crap. At least the lower level employees. You seriously think you can survive on that?!?! I never complained about working. But on thanksgiving. Give me a break. I think people can wait one day to get a deal on a flat screen.
Plus that's not even the point. I just think it's ridiculous that these stores are open on thanksgiving period. They don't allow you to have off. It's sad. That day should be spent with family, unless of course you want to work. Not giving people a choice just isn't right.

Happy thanksgiving the fact of the matter is that I WOULDNT be able to afford anything on retail salary!!!!!!!!! What do you think they pay their employees?!? I hardly think $9 an hour is enough to cover the bills!!!!! Are you kidding?!!
What you are failing to see is that many other companies pay their employees even less than that. Daycare workers, the ones that take care of infants ALL day, typically make less than that an hour. There are SO many businesses that pay their employees a low wage. So many. Not just Walmart.
If I were a Walmart worker, and I was hard pressed for money, and had trouble paying my bills, I would probably be a little happy to be making $18 an hour on the holiday, vs. making $0 if I had the day a off. I would just have an afternoon meal, instead of an evening one. In fact, we usually eat around 2 or 3pm anyway.

Im just saying that's its unfair to expect people to work on thanksgiving and not even give them a choice. Especially when you are making crap. Daycares are closed on holidays at least!!!

Someone had mentioned the shooting at Bryant park being over a fancy coat. And how asinine that is.
I think of that reasoning .. And then I connect it to retail stores being open on holidays. The materialism in America. It's all just stuff.
I know there are other sides to the debate. I get people need jobs. But there seems to be a bigger value on material possessions these days over most things. And usually the first thing people say is that there are declining values these days. Maybe this is part of the problem. Who knows.

Re: ....
I know this is a dead post, but the only way to stop this is to not shop on thanksgiving. If on one shops, there will be no money generated for the stores.
I, for one, refuse to shop on that day.
