Catholic Church questions

We moved to the area a few years ago, and still have not found a church. We need a church that isn't too strict, as my DH is not catholic. We have an older child (nursery age) we want baptized, so that's another element to this. We are in the Plainview area, but willing to travel 10-15 minutes for a great church.

Tia for any input!!

Re: Catholic Church questions

St. William's in Seaford.

I'm not Catholic either and they baptized DS.

They just said if I come to a group, I can convert.

Neither DH or I are religious though. Chat Icon

I also sent DS there last year for nursery school.

Catholic Church questions

Our Lady for Mercy in Plainview married both my cousins and they both married Jewish men so I would think they aren't as strict as both had a mass, other churches refused to so a mass if the spouse was not Catholic.

Catholic Church questions

DH and I got married at St. James in Seaford (border Bethpage). DH is Catholic. I consider myself agnostic (mom is Catholic, dad is Jewish). I was never baptized and other than the deacon asking if I wanted to convert, they didn't have a problem. My SIL is Catholic and her husband is Hindu and they baptized their son there and allowed her BIL to be godfather even though he's Hindu as well.

I would check out OLM first, much closer.
I was raised in that parish (I no longer practice). I have a family member whose children were baptized there. The mom is not Catholic and the parents were not married at the time of either baptism. No issues.

Re: Catholic Church questions

Your DH does not have to be Catholic for you to baptize your children in the Catholic church, so that's a non-issue. (Godparents will need to be Catholic, however, regardless of the parish you choose). Also, any one of any age is welcomed to be baptized, so you shouldn't worry about that either! :)

Why not start with your local parish? The "rules" apply to all churches, so just because your husband is not Catholic or your child is older, is not going to preclude you from baptizing your child in any Catholic church.

Good luck!

My sister, DS godmother, is not Catholic and this was never even questioned at St. William's, so the "rules" are not necessarily "fact".

The best bet is to stop in somewhere and speak with the priest.

I may get hazed for saying this, but I strongly believe it's a money thing and they don't really care, since baptizing your child there, brings in potential $$$$.

One godparent has to be practicing Catholic since technically you only need one godparent. The other does not.

This.

My godsons godfather isn't catholic and they were fine with that bc I am. He's more of an "honorary" godparent while I am his godmother.

I am not Catholic but I am my nephew's godmother (SIL is Catholic; like me, my brother isn't). My brother is also godfather to SIL's niece.

Catholic Church questions

In the catholic church godparents Must be catholic. If the person is not catholic then they are a witness. So while you might call people godparents in the eyes of the church they are only that if they are also catholic.

Baptizing is not a money maker like a wedding. There is not set donation and the church will take nothing. They look at baptizing as a new member to the church and would rather have someone baptized and not get a dime then say no we need $$$$ for it.

For donations - it depends on the parish. Our parish has a set donation of $80...

I second this. I have gone there my whole life and now that I don't live in Seaford, I travel there.

while i always thought this was true, i was recently a god mother and they did not ask if i was catholic.

in my parish my brother had to prove he was a practicing catholic to be a godfather at the time.

I wasn't talking about the baptism. I was talking about in the grand scheme of things. We now get money envelopes frequently from the church.

Not saying it's necessarily a bad cause, but I do have my general opinions.

The rules in fact, are fact. The doctrine is the doctrine regardless of the parish. I think ehat ends up happening is that some parishes ask for proof that the godparent is catholic and others do not. The ones that do not ask for proof, i would think are going on good faith that catholic parents are in fact following the Doctrine and choosing Catholic godparents for their children. But many people are not. Unfortunately, the practice of not asking allows people to believe that non Catholics are allowed to be godparents, when that is not the case. If it shared with the church that a godparent is not Catholic, they are put down as a witness, not a godparent.

I have been asked to provide proof to be a godmother (letter from pastor and my own baptismal certificate). My parish did not ask for proof for my own children, but stressed in the class that godparents are to be Catholic.

Re: Catholic Church questions

Honestly, I don't care..........witness, God parent, whatever.

DH and I are not religious anyway and did the baptism thing more to appease the grandparents.

Thats fine.. :) I was not at all commenting or judging your personal experience. I was just trying to explain to the OP why she shouldnt feel like she has to find a certain church. I was trying to Explain why i think people get confused with what are the requirenents. KWIM?
