What gender should the next dog be?

We have a male now. He isn't fixed yet, but we will be getting him fixed. He isn't aggressive at all, loves to play.

Is it better to bring in another male or female?

Re: What gender should the next dog be?

I have no idea what the right answer is, but here's my experience...

I have a male and a female. We had our male first, he's a year older than the female. He was neutered at about a year old. When we adopted the female, she was not spayed. Despite the fact the our male was fixed, he made advances for the female. I actually came home one time and he was stuck... in her. Chat Icon It was one of the most icky and bizarre moments of dog ownership. Chat Icon I can laugh about it now, but I was NOT laughing then.

My parents have two male dogs and they get along great. This is their second set of male dogs.

Re: What gender should the next dog be?

Not sure what the right answer is either but I have a male who is one year older than my female. She bullies him around so much (she is also smaller than him) that he is afraid of her.Chat Icon I mean, they get along ok and it's fine, but she is the BOSS.

I would say maybe male and male? Female would work too I am sure, I am not saying it's bad.

My male never made any advances toward my female but he was fixed way before she entered the picture.

I have heard that if you have a male dog it is often better to bring in a female.

Re: What gender should the next dog be?

I've read to get a smaller dog of the opposite sex.

but i do think with proper training, introduction, and the 'right fit' dog, i feel it could work out no matter the gender/size!

Don't know what the right answer is.. We always just got the dog we fell in love with - regardless of gender.

My current situation is 1 female a year older than 1 male.

In my past I lived in a house for 4 years with 2 males and 2 females ... once the females established who was head b*tch Chat Icon there was never any issues. The 2 males were always best buds and never showed any dominance issues (not that the lead female would have allowed that!) - the four of them were fixed...and perfectly fine.

When you have a male already, you can go either way. Females are more aggressive as pack leaders where as males will welcome new pack members easier.

Gender is not as important as temperament. I would look for a second dog that is easy going and dog friendly. It is important you have the two dogs meet to see if they get along.
