getting checked out
I've been off any kind of birth control for almost a year. Although we weren't trying we weren't really preventing pregnancy either. We didn't have to. My periods have been so irregular up to 3 months inbetween. I've been reading and I feel like I have some symptoms of PCOS; acne, weight gain, hair loss etc... I will go to my regular OB first. What can I expect as far as testing and visits?
ETA: When I was pg I didn't have GD but I did show a sugar intolerance. I know insulin and sugars have an effect on PCOS so it seems to be one more piece of the puzzle.

Re: getting checked out
I had a similar situation to you. I was put on BCP at 15 for irregular periods and stayed on it for 10 years. I went off BCP in December 2011 and never got a period. My OBGYN pretty much brushed me off and said to just TTC whenever. I decided to go see an RE in March of 2012 and was diagnosed with PCOS.
My advice to you is to go to an RE to be checked out. You know your body and if you think something is up, chances are that you're right. Good luck!

Thanks. Prior to DD1 I was very regular to the point where I could tell when I was ovulating. So the fact that I've gone 3 months without a period at times I know something is wrong.

Re: getting checked out
I agree. I definitely would get checked out if I were you. Ask for a hormonal work up, a fasting sugar examine. Suggest you think you may have PCOS. It's important to know your body and tell the drs if something doesn't seem right to you.
I have regular periods, I am clock work. But I started to get really bad cysts. Went to the dr and I have a very slight hormonal imbalance. Also I have extremely bad, and I mean real bad cramps each month. My old gyno said it was from a cysts that kept coming back. I switched drs and its because I have fibroids.
SO be your own advocate and see your dr for more testing to help you in this process.

I know I have 2 fibroids which were found when I was pregnant with DD1. They obvious didn't cause a problem then but I guess things can change.
Should I see my reg. ob/gyn or should I see a specialist?

I'd first seek the help of your regular obgyn to order the testing. If he/she finds something or if they say you have PCOS then I'd follow up with a specialist immediately for the treatment.

I have fibroids, too. I was told by my OB and RE that they can cause heavier periods, more severe cramps. But I don't believe fibroids cause a delayed period.

Re: getting checked out
Personally...I would skip the Ob/Gyn and just go right to the RE and have the full work up of testing. They monitor more closely too. If you have the coverage...why not. If insurance is an issue, then I would say go to the Ob/Gyn first.

I agree 100%, and don't waste time at your obgyn if you have coverage for infertility. An RE's job is to GET you pregnant- an obgyn is to help you STAY pregnant.

Re: getting checked out
I agree you should go to an RE. I have PCOS and my Ob/Gyn ran some blood tests and put me on metformin. The next step was clomid and I felt more comfortable going to an RE to get the full work up.
Good Luck!

getting checked out
I had been TTC unsuccessfully for 6 months and just "felt" something wasn't right. I met with my OBGYN and he had ordered some testing to be done, but once AF decided to stop showing up- I went straight to the RE. I at least feel like Im heading somewhere now....

Re: getting checked out
Since I have a strong feeling I have PCOS I called and made an appointment with Dr. Droesch through Long Island IVF. I don't know why but I'm excited and a little nervous too.

Great thoughts, I agree with them all. You should be excited going to the RE, they are the best specialist to address the possible pcos and the sugar intolerance. IMO I feel like they'll get the results more quickly too (ie-blood, u/s, etc.) and they'll figure out what's going on with your irregular periods as well. Best wishes for you!
