What is a favor/request someone has asked you....
that you felt was pretty nervy?
Maybe it's something that under normal circumstances you'd be okay doing, but they gave you little notice?
I am going through this right now with someone that gave me no notice and needs (well, wants) letters of recommendation, like tomorrow.
By nature I want to help though, but on my own terms. I also don't like feeling like "I" am doing something wrong because they're making their quarterlifecrisis my emergency.

Not really a biggie, but my MIL just assumes all the time that I'll just go let her dogs out, because i hardly work. She only lives 15 minutes away but in a direction I have no need to go. It is hard to say no though. She does very little for me and is never afraid to tell me no.

Re: What is a favor/request someone has asked you....
there have been a bunch of things - but most recently (posted yesterday on the relationship board)....
i work at a museum type place that has a big holiday exhibition taking place i got a text from a family friend asking me for passes. it is the first time they ask (two years ago we came here with them so they got in for free). I said i would try and i would get back to them tomorrow. then they proceeded to tell me they need 11 adult passes and 8 kid passes
are you kidding me?!?! they are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids!)
our policy is that we can get 2 adult and 2 kids passes any others need to be purchased at full price. that is what i ended up getting them

What is a favor/request someone has asked you....
Back when I was single, childless and had much fewer bills, a friend asked me to lend her $$$ to pay her rent that month. She promised she'd get it back to me ASAP. I had it to spare at the time so I agreed.
Well it took 6 months and her leasing a Lexus for me to finally get nasty and demand my money back. I didn't mind lending it to her if she was really struggling but then I watched her make a very decent living (she's a professional who also works lots of OT), spending on whatever she wanted and not even thinking about paying me back. That was what made me so mad.
I've vowed to never lend out money again.

Re: What is a favor/request someone has asked you....
Im a teacher and a colleague is working on another degree, she has to submit 15 lesson plans, she had the nerve to ask another teacher and me if we could each give her 5 of our lessons and then she only has to do 5 of her own, she is not really a friend of mine but the three of us kind of work together, she has never done anything for me but is constantly asking me how to do everything it is very annoying

A family member asked to borrow 10k dollars. Lol.
My husband's friend wanted him to co-sign a loan.
My mom's friend asked me for an impossible work related favor, lied to me, and then got extremely angry when I told her the truth. I can't really explain but it was ridiculous.

Re: What is a favor/request someone has asked you....
My crazy ass upstairs neighbors once called me asking for my Crock Pot. I said sure, come on down and get it. She comes and tells me that she also needs chicken broth. I gave her some and she makes a face and says, "Oh, it's not organic. I need organic. Would you mind coming upstairs with me, sit on my couch and babysit my sleeping kids while I run out and buy some organic chicken broth?" I thought that was pretty nervy, considering I have a child of my own to take care of. DH was home, so I went, but still, I was pissed.

Not really a big deal, but my sis in law ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS ends up asking me to buy gifts for myself or my dd FOR HER online and she will pay me back. OR go look for it FOR HER and she will pay me back... I simply started asking for gift cards and then she tells me no thats not enough I would prefer to get a gift. And then ends up having me buy the gift still! The bigger problem I have with it shes always bouncing checks so I HATE when she tells me you buy it and Ill pay you back. UGHHH Like I think its soo annoying to make someone purchase a gift thats supposed to come from you. Her comp is never workong or too slow or she doesnt understand online ordering. She did this to me for my baby shower. I ordered my own gift because she didnt understand how!

If I can help, I help.
If it puts me in an awkward situation, I decline.
I don't understand why it needs to be on YOUR terms. Either you can help this person, as long as you have the ability to do so, or you can decline.

I ran into the same issue recently. I work long hours and my nanny needed a recommendation right away. She started nagging me and I told her that she could either be patient or she could ask someone else to write it for her. She changed her tune after that.

Helping someone move. Ugh. Who the eff wants to do that? The people who are moving don't even want to do it.

My cousin has a disease where she is unable to have kids. I was asked by her mother to donate my eggs.
I think I win this one...

Re: What is a favor/request someone has asked you....
I have been in IT for 13 years. I don't think any further explanation is needed for that one.
A family member once told (not asked) us that they would be buying a condo in a resort community under our names. When we objected, they said we would inherit it when they die. As a consolation.
Same family members wanted us to buy into a pyramid scheme. Twice. Lend them money to put a downpayment on a new car.
For other family, when visiting for Christmas Eve, I was expected to hide in the basement and wrap all their kid's presents. Three years in a row. Fix their computer in another room while everyone else was eating and celebrating. Invited them to a big event in my life, they canceled last minute, we got into a huge fight and two weeks later expected me to come to their house to dog-sit like nothing happened. Same family another Christmas Eve, expected me to pay for my dinner which was cold Dominos pizza.
I could go on and on. I used to allow people to take advantage of me because I felt keeping the peace was more important. Now, I focus my giving nature on people that appreciate it.

To lie/cover for them at work.
To appear in court on their behalf with a doctor's note that they couldn't appear.

As if I didn't have a choice. She said "since she can't and you are the only female cousin, we would like you to freeze eggs for her."

Honestly as someone who has fertility issues I don't think this was that bad.

THANK YOU!!
I wasn't asking to start something and I do honestly feel for people who do have fertility issues but asking someone right out to do something so personal is a pretty tough thing to answer.

Imagine having someone crying to you how their baby girl will never get to experience the joys of pregnancy. Its heart wrenching. Then being put on the spot to answer will I donate eggs? The enormity of that question is not something to take lightly. If you answer yes, you are obligated. If you answer no, you twist that knife a little further.
