Anyone here a Special Ed. EI teacher?

I am currently an elementary special ed. teacher in a LI school district. I am pregnant with twins and due in the spring. When the babies come, I will have FOUR kids under 5! EEK! I don't think it makes sense for me to go back to work full-time, nor do I want to. However, we need some income from me coming in. We would be very tight on just DH's salary alone.

I am hoping I can land something part-time with my current district, but if that doesn't work out, I was thinking of possibly doing some EI or CPSE work through an agency. So, of course I have a few questions :)

What is the average salary per hour?(I would not be doing this full-time)

I believe you have to have insurance? How much does that cost?

Do you find you can make your own hours or does the agency dictate when you can work?

Do you feel like you have to work with multiple agencies or is one enough?

Finally, besides my own kids, I don't have teaching experience with babies and toddlers. Would this be a major issue?

TIA!!!!!

Ive been doing EI for several years now.

You dont always need insurance. If the agency has you as an employee (not as an indep consultant) you are covered under their insurance.

The scheduling is very flexible. You tell them your availability (times and travel distance) and they do their best to contact you based on that.

Most of the time, we become a bit more flexible if there is a need for a specific case which might be a bit further or a bit earlier/later than you would have preferred.
It's all a matter of what cases come up, which teachers they contact for them.

Also, there are many school age cases both in the schools (part time, lets say going to do resource room for one student for 40 minutes per day 5 X 40min).
It's all a matter of what type of schedule one can work out.
and there are also many school age kids on home instruction.

There are many options !

FM me, I will give you contact info

Can I jump in here? I've had this in the back of my mind as a future possibility too. Are you totally on your own in terms of supplies and curriculum? Obviously the kids have goals going in so do you just base everything on that and come up with ideas from that? If you also do evaluations, does the agency provide the testing materials? Is there any training when you start?

I'm a contract employee (1099) I have to carry Liability insurance but its less than $100 a year and it can be written off on taxes. You usually have to have your own testing materials even if you don't do Evals you have to test the children yearly for CPSE and CSE and every 6 months for EI. Some agencies will let you use or rent their materials. Being I am a 1099 they do not take out taxes so you have to pay them usually when you do your taxes but all material and mileage and fees can be written off. I am with 3 agencies they usually email a case out and the first person to respond gets first shot at it. EI can be seen 365 days a year even on weekends and holidays. The only thing you can not makeup with EI is if the family takes a vacation. CPSE and CSE only get seen during the school calendar unless IEP says otherwise but thats rare. I work in Nassau but Suffock just did something with the CPSE/CSE children where you can't see them after a certain time of day. EI meeting as usually done every 6 months at the families house with or without you. CPSE/CSE annuals are usually in the spring and no matter when they schedule you have to be avail either to go or teleconference. Agencies usually pay monthly but if you are with different agencies they pay at different times of the month so you can get paid every few weeks. If there is anything else feel free to ask

I do EI, CPSE and CSE currently through an agency where I am considered a part time hourly employee so they take taxes out and cover my insurance. The schedule is as flexible as you want it to be but I do need to supply my own toys, tests and testing supplies. I have been doing this for 11 years so if you have any questions feel free to ask Chat Icon
