After you send a potential employer your resume, what do you do next?

Should you follow up? How do you follow up? Any other advice?

Ugh, it's tough because with a lot of stuff being online only, it's really hard to talk to a live person and stand out.

If you have any connections at the agency, that's a good way to get an interview in my experience.

This is the ONLY way I know I landed my current position.

I had been applying to the health system for YEARS to no response.

It depends on the position. Many job post clearly state that they do not want candidates to call or email. Networking is probably your best bet like pp suggested.

Re: After you send a potential employer your resume, what do you do next?

The positions I've applied for so far have been directly with the company not through an agency. Problem is I'm new to the area and don't know anyone so its not like I can call someone I know that works for a certain company. If you don't have any connections, do you follow up after you email your resume?

No, I usually don't. I've sent out dozens of resumes, if they are interested, I'm sure they'll reply. Chat Icon

If there's an email you submitted to or a general HR one then I would send a follow up (not earlier than a week and a half after you submitted). Something short and sweet just saying you're still interested, hope they received your application and look forward to hearing from them soon.

I would NOT call. I work on some HR stuff including reviewing resumes and conducting interviews and I hate hate hate it when people call me to follow up and rarely ever take the call. It takes a very long time to get through the resumes of everyone that applies and phone calls come off as annoying and pushy to me.

An email 1.5-2 weeks after you apply is perfectly fine though!

This. Since most are online today they will say we will contact you if we find it a match. And I do know if you call they many times will say if you got a confirmation on the website then we have it. End of story.

No. I only follow-up with a thank you note after the interview. I know many people in hr and they hate when people follow-up after submitting their résumé.

This. I used to be in charge of hiring and it seemed like I would get all the nut jobs on the phone and then they would stalk me.

99.9% of the time they were not even qualified for the position.

The best story I have is someone who I believe was a HS drop out, no college and wanted to start at $80K a year...........

It's so annoying I know, but if there are any companies especially you are interested in working at, maybe post on LIF and we can give you some suggestions.
