If you are BFing

This is not post about if i should BF...it's a question for people who did/ are BF...

I am due with my second DS in a few months and I want to try BF again. With my first son he didn't latch and I pumped for a few months but I never got much milk production. If you had help, what did you use? La Leche? Lactation consultant? I'm in Nassau, so any recommendations would be so appreciated!!

If you are BFing

I relied a lot on the lactation consultants at the Hospital.

Good luck!

I used the lactation consultant at the hospital who helped until I got home and had issues with dd latching properly
I ended up buying nipple shields that helped dd latch - I wore them for a month and then was able to bf without them easily
Maybe worth a shot for you too

But while I was figuring all that out, I joined meetup and was going to go to a local la leche league meeting
I also called my insurance company and got the name of a lactation consultant that was covered by my insurance so give them a call before going out of pocket

I was always told that the baby sucking directly (as opposed to pumping) helps increase milk production. There's also things like fenugreek tea to help with production

The LC I used with DC1 is a LLL leader for the Floral Park group - I highly recommend the group.

I also used Michelle Turner for DC2 - she takes insurance, but be warned that you need to pay a copay for you and the baby.

I used a La Leche League leader who is also a breastfeeding support counselor. She came to my home and was fabulous.

Dr. Lauren Macaluso is a lactation specialist in New Hyde Park. She helped me TREMENDOUSLY. She also accepts insurance.

I too had issue with bf for my 1st and never got in a supply. With the 2nd, I used the consultants at the hospital every feeding. I also bought the shields and they were a blessing. Once we were home I spoke with the consultants at the hospital and went back for a check up. I also consulted with the ped dr.
Good luck!

I saw her when I had dd1 and had a bad experience - she literally told me to give up. I didn't listen, and we solved our issues in a few weeks and I went on to bf dd until she was 15 months. I couldn't believe a lc and dr would tell me to give up!

I love love love Dr Macaluso!! She is amazing, it took me a solid month but i am EBF, and she gets pumped breast milk when I'm at work. No supplementation yet. I love her. She was so gentle and kind. Strongly recommend seeing her.
She's a board certified Pediatrician who specializes in lactation. She is also very modern, and it laid back which i loved.

Not the same, but I read The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and referred back to it frequently in the beginning. It was my BF bible! I didn't have a lactation consultant (except in the hospital), but this book helped me a lot! I went on to BF for 2 years w/my DD and hope to do the same this time.

DC1 couldn't latch. BFing is so so so important to me that I refuse to be defeated again. No matter what. I surrounded myself with a great BFing community (lots of FB groups), did tons of research, I loved the book the womanly art of breastfeeding, and had a few IBCLC numbers in my phone. On the day of dc I had an IBCLC come and assess and help our latch and I still rely on her daily for questions/concerns. Well worth the $!

I got help from the LCs at the hospital, problem was that they were putting DD on each time so iy wasnt until I got home that I realized that I didn't know how. I ended up calling Joy Padula. She was awesome. She taught me so much. She didn't leave until we were both comfortable that I had it down. Also went to La Leche League meetings where her mother is the leader.
