4 year old waking up confused in the middle of the night.
Third time this week my son has woken up or some what woken up in the middle of the night. Tonight it was at 1230. I heard him whimpering in his bed. I looked at the monitor and saw him trying to get out of his bed at the wrong end. He has a little light in his room so it isn't dark in there but he seemed confused. He finally got out at the other end but then he climbed right back in and dozed off. A few minutes later I hear him crying. I figured he wasn't feeling well so I went in and he was all blotchy from crying. I picked him up and he was kind of out of it. I asked him if he wanted to see grandma, he said yes. He was ok when I got him downstairs. He was dozing in off in my arms so I put him back to bed. He asked for milk. I got him a cup of milk and tucked him in. He never drank the milk. He dozed back off. A minute later I heard him call my name and he said he had to pee... Once he peed he went right back to bed and back to sleep. The night before he woke up at 230am and came in my room and was acting weird. He had to pee at that point too. He is potty trained during the day and wears a pull up at night. He has been dry almost every morning for the last 2 weeks. I just figured out that the waking up is caused by him having to pee, but I don't understand why he is in a confused state. Is it his body becoming more aware that he has to go? Or what?

Re: 4 year old waking up confused in the middle of the night.
i dont know, I get really confused in the middle of the night too ;) ... he is probably just not fully awake. His body is trying to wake him so he can use the bathroom but he is learning the cues.
My 3.5 year old used to wake up after naps and think it was the morning (especially in the winter when its dark earlier)...
Back to sleep training ... I would let him work it out unless he is really crying for you! I sometimes hear my son call out of moving around in his bed but he always settles!
Just make sure to limit liquids a few hours before bed and always go to the bathroom right before bed. If we don't enforce the bathroom trip right before bed, we have issues in the middle of the night too!

My 6 y/o wakes up to pee and is def not awake when she goes. I leave her be and she goes right back to bed. I'm sure that is what is happening with your son.

Re: 4 year old waking up confused in the middle of the night.
He goes to the bathroom before bed. I guess he is night training himself... I guess I will just have to wait it out. HE went right back to sleep after he went to the bathroom. I guess he just has to learn what is going on and hopefully he will figure it out sooner, rather then later.. LOL He has no memory of waking up when I ask him the next morning..

My son sleep walks and thats what happens with him as well. He wakes up 99% crying/whimpering and talks about nonsense or just makes weird noises. Once I take him pee he sort of snapes out of it and goes right to bed with no recollection of anything the following morning.

That is what happened the first night. He was just walking around his room in a daze. Touching random things and whimpering.... He was NOT awake. He put himself back to bed and went to sleep. Last night he was also sleep walking, trying to get out of the bed at the wrong end. Whimpering and crying... I am going to cut his fluid intake even more before bed and see if that helps. I know he can stay dry at night. Not sure if this is related, but he has also been waking up an hour earlier since this happened.

Re: 4 year old waking up confused in the middle of the night.
My 4 year old does the same and its always to pee...I make sure most nights to get him to go to the bathroom before he goes to sleep and this always solves the problem..if my 7 year old wakes during the night disoriented or confused its always that she has to go pee too.
I put it down to the fact that they are in a deep sleep then their body gives them the signal to pee but they dont really want to get up but have to so the confusion sets in..its like their body and mind are at odds with each other...luckily for me the mind wins and they wake up and pee!!

My 4 year old sleep walks as well as this is exactly how it started. Cutting her fluid intake didn't help bc she wasn't really waking bc she had to go - she was just sleep walking/or waking and then would decide she had to go.
