Would you let your kid go

My DS will be 8 this year- not until October. But I mentioned maybe this year instead of a big party maybe he would rather take a couple of close friends to Medieval Times. He loved the idea. It's about and hour or so from our house. Would you be ok with your DC driving with someone else?

ETA- I would be totally ok with my DS going if it was one of his close friends.

Re: Would you let your kid go

I am not comfortable with other people driving my child but if this was for a close friend then I would be happy to drive my child...drop off and pick her up with the party was done. I would work around it.

I don't think I would to be honest. But I'm probably not the norm, and am weird about people driving my kids, especially that far. I would probably drive my child there though and just do something in the area. They do a cute birthday celebration there, fun idea!

Yes. When my daughter was 9 she went to the Renaissance Faire with a friend. Have to say I was nervous as hell because she's the kid that will wander away from everyone.

In a restaurant & a small group, I'd be fine with it.

Re: Would you let your kid go

That's funny. I did that with some friends when I turned 14. I think 8 would be ok if I knew the parents real well. Some of my friends have kids the same age. We are all close and great the kids get along so I'd probably consider going with another family that the kids are close.
Then again my oldest is 4 so I'm only thinking in terms of that age. Chat Icon
Sorry, I'm no help. I take one year at a time.

I would have to know the parents really well at 8. I guess I'm concerned about them getting lost and a the car trip.

My 10 yo is going there for her 5th grade trip though and I didn't think twice about it haha.

Funny but we did exactly this for my DS's 8th birthday. The kids loved it. We did drive some of he kids and had one other mom drive some of the kids in her car as well. All the kids invited were close friends, not just random classmates. All their parents knew me/us and have been coming over for play dates and such for years. It worked out well and everyone had a great time!

I bet that's a cute party!

Honestly, I don't think I would let DC go, but I'm nervous about others driving them esp. a far distance and with bridges and/or tunnels.

I dread when DC gets asked to something like this and I have that choice to makeChat Icon

What a great idea! I have an 8 year old and I would definitely let him go if it was a good friend.

8 is a little younger, I would probably allow it if they were 10+

I would.

I am probably more lenient when it comes to driving. But I don't have the luxury of being picky with who drives my child to be honest.

Re: Would you let your kid go

My son is 8 and I would absolutely let him go with his closest friends because I know and am comfortable with their families. In fact, he went to the Islander game to celebrate a friends birthday on January 2nd in the middle of the blizzard.

FYI to anyone who would purchase their own ticket and go along... 8 year old boys are already at the stage where their parents embarrass them. You'd be better off not allowing him to go. Chat Icon

Funny - I don't see that at all with my son and his friends. My son is still ok with mom being around as well as many of his friends. Unless I bring up a silly story from his babyhood - he doesn't get too embarrassed by me.

I would be nervous if the parents were bringing a lot of people with few adults to a big setting. But small group, close friend - I would be totally comfy.

Re: Would you let your kid go

I'm not very comfortable now, but do let my oldest (6.5) drive to close places with a few of my mom friends that I know pretty well. I'll have to start letting her do things as she gets older so maybe by 8 I would be okay with this.

I have to say, many parents (myself included) seem to be really conservative with stuff like this with their first kid. Most of the folks I know seem to loosen the reigns significantly with child number 1 and number 2. We shall see.

Re: Would you let your kid go

I would with close friends. DS haven't had the chance to do it yet, but we took two of his closest friends to a baseball game (on different days. We borrowed their booster seats).

No, I would not let anyone take my kid over state lines. I would be worried about the driving and if there was any drinking involved.

Not unless it was a VERY close friend and I would drive my own child.
