Echogenic Focus?
Just came back from our 20 wk scan and an echogenic focus showed up on the babies heart. The dr was great at explaining that it will not make a difference on how the heart functions and basically is of no concern for the heart. However, the fact that it's a marker for downs has me really worried. Everything physically looks normal with the baby which is a good thing and all of my bloodwork came back normal. The doctor is confident that the baby will be totally normal but that minimal chance of downs is enough to shake me. We chose to do the new blood test they offer instead of doing an amnio. The new test is 99% accurate at detecting chromosomal abnormalities but it does have a small risk of false positives. I guess I am just looking to hear from anyone that has had a child with this and if someone can offer reassurance.

Hey I just wanted to let you know that I can relate. My 20 week scan was fine and all my bloodwork came back okay too. But I had an appt 2 weeks ago at 29 weeks and they saw an echogenic bowel. I know its not the same as the heart but its also a marker for downs which of course had me very concerned. I am now 31 weeks and have an appt tomorrow. My dr didn't seem too concerned but I agree when he said possible marker for downs I got really scared. It sounds like you are doing the maternit21 which I did as well (since I am 35). I didn't do the amnio either since the test came back normal and such a low risk for any abnormalities. Anyway- just wanted to send prayers and hopefully both of our babies will be fine. :)

Re: Echogenic Focus?
I had a slight one on the heart at my 20 week appointment. My blood test results had such large number (1 in 7,474) for downs that I turned down further testing. No other markers showed up on the sono. DD is now 3 months old and is perfectly healthy with a perfectly healthy heart :) Sometimes technology today is a little too good!
Good luck!

Re: Echogenic Focus?
I had a similar issue at the 20 week scan for my DD. My numbers were good and the echogenic focus was the only soft marker. She is now 19 months old and perfectly healthy with no issues! The way it was explained to me the echogenic focus is the "softest" of the markers and almost means nothing without any other markers. I'm sure everything is fine - try not to worry (I know it's easier said than done)!

Echogenic Focus?
I had the same with my son at my 20-week scan. It is a soft marker for downs, so if they don't see any other markers, you most likely have nothing to worry about. They checked his heart again at my 31 week growth sono and the echogenic cardiac focus was gone. He's now a wonderful, healthy 5 yr old. Hang in there!

Echogenic Focus?
My DD had that. And my #'s also happened to come back at a high risk for Downs. I opted for no further testing (amnio, etc) and DD was not born with Downs. Everything will be ok.

Echogenic Focus?
One of my twins had an echogenic bowel at 17 weeks. Now it is all clear and amnio came back perfect!!! Sometimes these things disappear!
