Peanutbutter
DS is 1 tomorrow. I want to introduce him to peanutbutter now or soon. I really don't think there will be an issue, but the world has made slightly nervous I was thinking of bringing it the pediatrician and doing it there. How did you do it?
Yes, I know many of you will say not to yet, but I plan to. I have my own feelings on why.

Do you have any nut allergies in the family? They usually recommend you waiting because of the allergies. My MIL is allergic to nuts so i waited with my first, got him tested no allergies and now he wont eat it at all so i kind wish i tried sooner. I put a little bit of peanut butter of an apple or banana with him but he doesnt like the texture.

Re: Peanutbutter
We took him to an allergist shortly after we got his 1 year bloodwork done, they ruled out a peanut allergy so we knew it was ok to give him PB after that.. he loves it! I just gave him a little bite off my finger at first.

Re: Peanutbutter
We gave peanut butter to both my kids shortly after turning 1. No allergies in our family and ped gave us the go ahead.
First DS I gave him peanut butter cheerios in small increments for a few days and then gave him real peanut butter.
Second DS went straight to peanut butter.
I did purchase benedryl in case I had any issues, but luckily we were very fortunate and had no problems.
If you are comfortable with your decision, go for it.
My only suggestion is doing it in the earlier part of the day and not right before a nap, just so you can watch in case there are any issues.

I gave PB at 9 months. My ped is all about early exposure.
We bought peanut powder, and mixed it in her apple sauce and then yogurt.

Re: Peanutbutter
We introduced it to DD when she was 15-months old.
Honestly, I took a spoon and put it in the peanut butter and gave it to her to lick to see if she liked it. She gobbled it all up, we watched for a reaction and saw none and she likes eating it.
If you are concerned with a reaction, just have some Benadryl for children at home at your disposal, so you can give the child a dosage before taking them to a Dr/Hospital.

Re: Peanutbutter
I spread a thin layer on a cracker and gave it to Dd with breakfast. Do it in the morning so there is plenty of time to look for a reaction and go to the ped if needed. Just like any new food, I did this for 3-4 mornings in a row.

My DS had a piece of candy with peanuts in it before I year. We never gave it to him but it was in the table and he grabbed it before we noticed.

Peanutbutter
We waited until right before 2, because that was the recommendation at the time (2010). They have since changed it. We had no history of nut allergies in our families, but our son does, in fact, have a peanut, walnut, pecan allergy. Go figure. I would definitely have some benedryl on hand and, like someone else mentioned, do it early in the day so you can monitor them.

Peanutbutter
I did it on his first birthday. Spread a very thin layer on a piece of bread. Increased the amount over three days and now one of his staple foods is pb&j. We are a house of pb eaters, so we wanted it out of the way as soon as we were able.

Re: Peanutbutter
Our ped said just give a little bit on his tongue in the morning so you can watch him that day. As long as nut allergies don't run in your family, your baby generally should be fine. But again, do it in the morning so you can watch the entire day.
I also always have children's Benedryl on hand in case DS has any allergic reaction.

This. I made half of a PB & J sandwich. I gave her just a little PB on a spoon first and then waited maybe 30 min to make sure there was no immediate violent reaction. Then I gave her the half a sandwich and she LOVED it.
We also do not have any peanut allergies in the family.

Re: Peanutbutter
My pediatrician believes in early exposure, and it's such a good source of protein, we gave it around 9 months. I melted a spoonful in the microwave to get it thinner and spread it on some toast. Dd loves it but sometimes has issues with the stickiness!

Re: Peanutbutter
I'm one of those that has no family history on either side and my older son has a peanut allergy. I hear eating PB through pregnancy and BF helps which I did. He didn't have actual PB on bread till 2 but he had it on accident two or three times a little after one. Two times it was a PB granola bar and another time he drank a smoothie I got that had PB in it. No reaction as far as I could tell. Have him PB on bread at 2 twice. One day he had a rash next time he had rash and said his throat hurt. Got him tested after that. So I guess you never know.
My youngest is just about to turn two and I have yet to try with him. I'm nervous!! My older son are PB over the summer by accident and had a huge reaction. Had to go to ER.

Peanutbutter
No allergies in our family but i did wait until she was tested because i wamtes to be safe. Peanut allergies are no joke if there is any type of severre reaction. I workes with a girl who had one and she ate a salad at work (we workes in a drs office) and the reataurant didnt tell her they made her salad with walnuts in it. She had a reaction where her tongur swelled and she ended up in the hosp. Even in a drs office they calles an ambulance...
I know you said you made your mind up and thats up to you but just be careful. No matter when your child tries it theyll try it theres no rush theyve got forever.
When i did try after her test was neg for allergies i just made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I think the world has made us paranoid about everything -
My only suggestion would be to do it for breakfast, and like someone else said, not close to nap time so that you can keep an eye on them - Both of my boys had PB at a year - they both LOVE it -

Re: Peanutbutter
We tried sesame around 8 months (in hummus) and my son was allergic.
Tried peanut around 10 months with no reactions.
Tried almond around 12 months and he was allergic to that (and all tree nuts) as well.
We were told to avoid peanut and when he was tested again at 3 years old he was also severely allergic.
I have 2 younger ones and we tried all around 12 months and neither have food allergies thus far.
No family history of food allergies on either side. You really just won't know until you try and even trying 1, 2, 3 times without reaction doesn't mean your child won't be allergic.

I think the world has made us paranoid about everything -
When it comes to food allergies, they are on the rise BIG time. And when parents say, Oh I have no nut/food allergies in my family so nothing to worry about - WRONG.
Speaking as a mom with a peanut allergy son, we have no food allergies in our family and I had no benadryl in the house when I first gave him peanut butter. Big mistake. Parents need to be aware of the risks. I think in this case, "paranoid" is not such a bad thing.

Yup want to agree! I never in a million years would of thought my son would have a peanut allergy. I don't have a single allergy. My husband only has seasonal allergys. No one in the family has a peanut allergy. So I'm not sure why so many kids have nut allergies these days. So being paranoid is not a bad thing.

Re: Peanutbutter
My ped suggested I waited until DD was 2 bc her cousin has a severe nut allergy. I gave it to her on a day I knew her ped was open and if I had to run her there I could.
