Pediatric Opthamologist and Glasses (long)

My son is almost 3 and I noticed in a few photos his right eye was starting to turn in a little. I took him to Dr. Kronwith (my pedi recommendation) and my DS was diagnosed as farsighted. We went right from his office to the eye glass place he suggested, Eye Deal b/c they specializes in children's eyeglassesl. Now my son won't wear them. Several things are going on here.

First, in the appointment with Dr. K, he put some lenses in front of me and showed me what my DS sees and it was so blurry I couldn't believe it. I honestly could not. My son can recognize things that are far away. If his vision really was that bad, he'd be blind as a bat. We will be driving and he'll point out things I don't notice, like school buses, cement trucks or birds. I don't how his sight could be THAT bad.

The lens in the glasses are so thick they are Mr. Magoo like. I look through them and they are as blurry as the ones the dr. put to my eyes.

My son won't wear them and he's suppose to have them on all the time. We're trying bribing, etc. It's been less than 24 hours and he's worn them about 10 seconds in all. Any suggestion from BTDT moms?

Lastly, I wonder if I should've gotten a second opinion before jumping into buying the glasses. These lens are serious and I don't want to mess with my son's vision. Anyone have any experience with Dr. Kronwith or any other pedi opt they would recommend?

Thanks so much!

I would 100% get a second opinion if you are concerned that there is an error.

Glasses are not always comfortable. Does he say why he doesn't want to wear them? Headaches? Can't see?

Re: Pediatric Opthamologist and Glasses (long)

He says they are too bright. I asked if they hurt behind his ears. He says yes. But I should say my DS is good at making up stories.

But something just doesn't feel right about these. I would love to hear any recos for other pedi opt to get a second opinion.

My DD is almost 4 yrs and has been wearing glasses for 2 years now. She failed her vision screening at her 12 month well visit and we took her to see Dr. Koty at

He's been excellent. In your DS case I would get a second opinion. I would also look for red marks behind his ears to see if there is any rubbing the frames can be adjusted. During the eye exam is should be obvious what he can see and what he can't. If his eye is drifting he is at risk for amblyopia (lazy eye). He probably has a diagnosis of anisometropia (one eye sees better than the other).

We've taken both of my kids to their Pt.Jeff office. We saw a different doctor, but I would definitely recommend their office.

We went to endear at the recommendation of dr kronwith too, and my ds hated his first pair of glasses and we paid $$$$.

This time, we took the rx to Davis vision in the mall, got two pairs of glasses for less than we paid at eye deal, and upgraded the lenses to the thin ones. Ds loves them and the frames are way more comfortable than the ones we got at eye deal.

Yeah, the glasses weren't cheap. But it was an emotional day and I was sort of on autopilot and not thinking. Otherwise I would've thought to get a second opinion then.

Pediatric Opthamologist and Glasses (long)

Definitely get a second opinion, our first doctor gave DD a very strong prescription also and I found it odd because she also from what I noticed had no issue seeing things. We went to a new doctor and while she still needed glasses, the prescription was a lot less.

For glasses, I let DD pick what she liked. She picked this crazy pair of I think orange glasses but she loved them. That helped her keep them on because she thought she looked cool. They also sell a more rubbery glasses with a strap that you may want to use at first until he gets use to wearing them, then switch to a different pair.

And yes, very expensive!

I highly, highly recommend Dr. Robert Strome in Great Neck. I was diagnosed with strabismus and nearsightedness when I was 2 yrs old. I saw him from then, until I was an adult. He also did corrective surgery on the muscles in my eyes for the strabismus. They are now perfect.

I've been using Dr Levi since DS was born. She is excellent. My son was prescribed glasses at 1. He hardly ever wore them for the first 6 months. Now we just got a new prescription and new frames at 2. He wears his new glasses all the time and even brings them to me to put them on.

Definitely get a second opinion. LI Pediatric Opthomology has a great reputation. I know that when I first get a new prescription that it is hard for me to wear my glasses at first - seeing things sharp and crisp is hard to get used to. That's just my personal experience as an eyeglass wearer though.

Did the dr only mention farsighted? My DS was just told he needs glasses and although his Px is for faresightedness, he is wearing the glasses to keep his weaker eye strong so that it doesn't eventually drift and promote normal vision development. I found a great website which also has a FB support group called My Little Four Eyes. The moms on there are experts and super helpful!!! Best of luck! I know how hard it is starting out with your little one in glasses!!!Chat Icon

Similar for me too!

Diagnosed with amblyopia at 5. I now took dd to him as a preventative measure to make sure she didn't have it (as of now she's good!)

Re: Pediatric Opthamologist and Glasses (long)

Where do you live? My son is 6 and in his first pair of glasses. I have the opposite problem as he rarely wants to take them off. I did not go to the dispenser recommended by his doctor as I want to the place I have used since they first opened. I would recommend this place. The entire trick to it for my son was to get glasses with a character on the temples. I think it would have been the same when he was 3. When they are on, the characters do not show but he likes his "secret SpongeBob." I was against the idea because I wanted him to have a totally different style but the optician told me to go with the ones he kept on when we visited. He was right. I have to go back for a spare pair now. Yes, you should make sure the prescription itself isn't uncomfortable. I would call the Dr., to ask if there should be an adjustment period to your son's type of prescription but I would also get a second opinion. Message me if you want my eyeglass dispenser's info.

Re: Pediatric Opthamologist and Glasses (long)

We saw Dr. Roberts to get a second opinion and he explained things really in-depth to me and even drew me a picture of the eye and how/where things focus when you have reg vision, near and far sighted. He prescribed a much less Rx (475 instead of 725) b/c he wants DS's eyes to do some of the work. I really liked Dr. Roberts and we liked the office better so we'll stick with him moving forward.

The only thing I didn't like that he said was that DS will prob be in glasses his whole life. The first dr said in a few years we might be able to train his eyes to see normally. I asked if that was why he was given such a strong Rx. He said no.

After the appointment we went back to the eyeglass store and we're getting the lenses changed. Dr. Roberts also said with the lesser Rx DS will take to them easier but we'll have to be on top of him to wear them. Glad we went for a second opinion.

Thanks again for all the recommendations!

I'm one of four, and all of us wear glasses. It's not so bad Chat Icon Your DS may wear them forever, or he may grow out of needing them. I don't think any doctor can know what will happen. But it could be worse, right?

Glasses are a weird new sensation for a very young child. They need to get used to it. Once he figures out that he can see better with them on, he'll leave them alone. A friend had a genius idea: she bought a cheap pair of frames with clear lenses, so her three year-old could learn by example.

I'm glad you got a second opinion. JMO, but I'd stick with Eye Deal or another store that specializes in kids for the actual glasses. I'd rather pay a little more for expertise, and cut corners someplace else.
