Communion Dress - inappropriate?

I went to Little Dickens in Lake Grove this past weekend with the intentions of purchasing a Christie Helene dress for my DD's May communion. They had the exact dress I wanted on a mannequin, but my DD turned her nose up to it and immediately fell in love with this dress:
External Image

I was told they didn't have the Christie Helene dress in my DD's size and they couldn't order it, BUT they could order the dress that she did pick out and have it here in 1-2 weeks. So I ordered it.

I was reluctant to say yes to it from the beginning because I think it's a bit too flashy/gaudy for a communion (and especially since my MIL is a former nun), but one of the sales girls said a lot of young girls were buying it (I'm married to a salesman, I should know better. Chat Icon ) Plus the dress was half the price of the one I was originally looking at, which helped with my decision. Chat Icon

Is the dress too over the top?

FWIW, I plan to have DD wear a bolero, cardigan or some type of coordinating wrap while in the church.

My DH doesn't seem to think so, but I've been wondering if I should be looking for a back up dress just in case. Chat Icon

We'll I'm Jewish so I don't know anything about communion dresses but I love it and wouldn't blink if I saw a little girl wearing this for a communion. Def with a little jacket for the church.

I'm Catholic and I don't know anything about communion dresses. Chat Icon My mom made mine...and she was kind enough to inform me the other night that it was made out of curtain fabric. Chat Icon

Re: Communion Dress - inappropriate?

My DD (5) would absolutely love that dress. But I am pretty sure I would steer her into something a bit more traditional, as I don't feel it looks like a communion dress (not conservative enough). Then again, I have no idea what communion dresses look like these days. Now you have me curious, going to take a look. My gut says I would find something else that she likes that I also feel is appropriate.

I agree with this, but I also tend to be more conservative.

Re: Communion Dress - inappropriate?

Just googled to get some ideas. For ex, I would go for either one of these as I don't mind a bit more elaborate (I love the bottom one, not so much the top dress but my point is I don't mind something less plain). But that dress is extremely couture looking IMO and for me that's not traditional enough for a communion. I think it's a combination of the straps and the tulle skirt. For a wedding, sure! But not communion. Although I do love it and know so many girls who would.

I don't think it is over the top, but I wouldn't care for the straps on it, for my DD. Just be sure the girls will be allowed to wear a jacket or bolero or something in the church. In my church, they aren't.

You made me think of Scarlett's curtain dress in Gone With the WindChat Icon

To the OP, it's got a little more bling than I would want for a Communion dress.

Re: Communion Dress - inappropriate?

My son made communion last year and we attended a bunch of communions last year. I just looked over some of his pics and a quite a few girls had thinner spaghetti straps on top. Most had more traditional dresses - I saw some with that volume on the bottom in the Queens communions I attended (not many out here on LI). It may not be my style but if it makes her happy and she feels like the princesses she is, don't sweat it. I don't think it is inappropriate.

Communion Dress - inappropriate?

It's a very pretty dress for a party, but IMO, it's not a communion dress.

I love the second one that Goobster posted. It's traditional with a flair. Definitely communion appropriate.

I think it is adorable and is fine.

My one niece had spaghetti straps and the other I think too actually. They go to a catholic school and most of the girls had dresses like that.

Ok, thank you for your opinions girls. Chat Icon

I tend to be more on the conservative side when it comes to church functions, which is why I asked the sales girl if I could snap a photo to send to my DH to get his opinion/approval. I was shocked when my DH said "Sure, why not?" Chat Icon My MIL is coming to our home this weekend, so it will be interesting to get her take on it.

My DD truly loves the dress and purchased all her accessories to go with it and I know she would be heartbroken if I told her she couldn't wear it. My MIL will probably be my deciding factor with this dress. Chat Icon

Heck, I hope I can even find a backup dress in her size! Little Dickens didn't have a lot when I was there this past weekend and I would imagine most places are running low on stock in general.

I feel the same way.

I did compromise with dd over her dress. She got so bling on it because it was more her style but communion-like.

You may want to check out Litlle Rascals. They have a huge inventory. It's not very showroom like but the amount of stock in that store is insane.

They also steered me away from a a more expensive dress because they noticed her arms were a little red after wearing it & said if it was rubbing a little then, in a few months it's going to really irritate her because she may still grow.

Not for a communion, IMO, but if you plan on the sweater, etc. and she's in love with it, why not? I knew a girl who HATES dresses so her parents let her get a suit.

Re: Communion Dress - inappropriate?

I greatly prefer the dress you originally had in mind. Not a fan of the first dress for a communion.

Maybe try Little Shop for Babies. They may be able to get you the it's dress.

I just asked my DD, because we are still on the hunt for her Communion dress. She was like "YES, I love that!"

I on the other hand, am very conservative.... old school Catholic school girl here who also has her kids in Catholic school. I'm going for a more traditional look, with short sleeves and not too wedding gown-ish. And no veil, but I may lose out on that. I have to pick my battles. The one you posted that you wanted to get was very nice!

I do not think that is appropriate for a communion dress at all. Sorry.

ETA: The one you went in for (that you linked) is beautiful and classy. Definitely go with that one, if you can get it!

Communion Dress - inappropriate?

I don't think it's all appropriate for a communion. But I am very conservative in clothing. What bothers me most about it is the feathery thing in the shoulder. Admittedly, I lived in western pa which is quite a bit more conservative, but I sang at some communions last spring at much church and saw nothing like this and I honestly doubt it would have been allowed. I believe they had to have white dresses that were at least knee length and covered the shoulders.

To me it looks like a beauty pagent outfit, not a communion dress.

Re: Communion Dress - inappropriate?

Unfortunately I don't think it's appropriate for a communion dress, I'm sure there are some girls somewhere that would wear it but I think it looks more like a mini wedding dress I wouldn't let my dds wear it, if you are having doubts go with your gut

I would not have picked the dress you bought. How does it look on daughter?

Re: Communion Dress - inappropriate?

Thank you for the recs on Little Rascals!! Chat Icon I couldn't believe how much stock they had!!! They were very helpful as well!

So I showed the photo of the dress we originally purchased to my MIL and her face said it all. She then showed it to my FIL and his face mirrored MIL's. Chat Icon My DH still thought we were crazy. But being that my DD didn't even try on any dresses, I thought it was best to go to a store to see what they have and test out some fittings.

We ended up with a Christie Helene. My DD looks like a princess in it! Chat Icon

I was telling my next door neighbor about my dress chaos and then showed her the photo and she loved it and thought it was cute. She also has 4 girls who received 1st communion. She said a lot of girls wear those types of gowns. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well, I made my MIL and FIL happy. Chat Icon

If you're going to OLQM, I'd be surprised if they had a lot of dresses like your dd wanted.

Glad it worked out. They treated Maddie like a princess.
