I think a lot of the issue was that they changed to common core and these poor kids in the upper grades were told they needed to learn something different than what they did for the last 4 or so years. Completely crazy. For the young ones, mine included, they won't know any different. The only issue I really have is that I can't help her with her homework lol.
I agree but common core is taking out common sense! Its not benefiting our kids at all.

Common core not so bad
Like many said, we had standards that were similar to common core standards since the NCLB Act. As a teacher in the trenches, I have a serious problem with the common core and the way it was rolled out. Like many things in education, common core standards have some good points, but the bad overweighs it. It's pushing kids to higher standards before they have the skills needed for those standards. And of course they roll out these standards the same year they changed over the test the same year they made the test count towards teacher evaluations. Follow the money trail. Gates, Pearson, King... Districts are being coerced into using the states free modules which are terrible. They are riddled with mistakes, the print is so small kids could barely read it. It is scripted and the lessons are drawn out. Never mind that the kids need the basic writing and grammar skills before they can tackle the modules. The 3rd grade problems are written in a way that is tricky and difficult to understand. The words decompose and partition are used in fractions lesson. My students are 8!!! It's a reading comprehension now not just math. I could go on and on. I beg all of you, ones with small children and ones with older ones, do your research before you make a decision about the common core. Follow the money trail, research the men and women in business behind this move. Talk to teachers who truly know what's going on and get their feedback. Because it's not pretty.
Btw after these common core ELA and Math tests- we never see the tests again, we don't get kids scores until after they are already in next grade. We get a raw score and number. We don't use to assess what their strengths and weaknesses are. So what is the purpose of all this high stakes testing??? Money and Evaluation....,,

Re: Common core not so bad
My current kindergartner is doing amazing. However,....
My second DD has been receiving services as a special needs preschooler and I DO worry about whether she will keep up with the expectations next year in kindergarten. She is not a dumb child at all, but she learns differently and from what I understand, CC will be a problem for these children. That is something that should be taken into consideration.
