Newly pregnant and confused?

So my DH and I have been TTC for about 5 months now, and last month AF was nearly 2 weeks late but all my pregnancy tests were coming out negative...then I got AF (or what I thought was AF) the very end of February, and started TTC again. I just took a test 2 days ago and it said I'm 3+ weeks pregnant (ClearBlue). I just moved out to Suffolk and gave Dr. O'Keefe a call to make an appointment, and they told me that if the tests came out positive, then I'm pregnant and they can't see me until I'm 8-10 weeks.
Is this normal? I thought the doctors would confirm a pregnancy first, as well as maybe give you a list of do's and don'ts as well as some sort of vitamins??

Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Btw this is an alias, I can't take a chance of people I know finding out about my (good?) news just yet!

TIA!!

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

Most OBs won't see you until 8 weeks because they will be able to see and tell you much more at that point. The fact that the office told you 8-10 weeks is a little odd though... waiting until 10 weeks for the first appointment is definitely not normal. I would at least make the appointment now for the 8 week mark and maybe take another test to make sure it wasn't a false positive! Definitely pick up some OTC prenatal vitamins... I like Vita Fusion gummies myself. Chat Icon Congrats!

OB's seeing you at 8-10 weeks the earliest is normal. If I were you I'd start on prenatals now.

Not sure why your test is indicating 3+ weeks ... I believe those tests measure the HCG in your urine. Either you ovulated earlier than you think or maybe there's twins in there? Can you ask your doctor to send you for some bloodwork just to confirm your beta levels and that should help paint a better picture?

Maybe you can call and express your concerns and they can put you in for now just to make sure everything is OK? At the very least I would want to get a beta blood test done. I know my OB would take me if I insisted. Good luck!

I just contacted my old obgyn in Queens to see if he could see me earlier since I've been with him since TTC.

Totally normal for them to not see you before 7-8 weeks. The wait is worse than the 2ww!!

Newly pregnant and confused?

My doc wouldn't see you until 2 missed periods. I still think that it's silly during one of the most crucial points of pregnancy to not see women and review what is/is not important.

Start taking prenatals, and try calling the doc to see what they suggest in terms of limiting foods

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

8 weeks to see obgyn is normal. Get started on prenatal vitamins in the mean time and congratulations :)

Edit: I just remembered when I called my obgyn, the nurse got on the phone and told me things to start taking, foods to start avoiding, etc. so it put my mind at ease for next few weeks. Maybe see if you can do that in the mean time?

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

The weeks predictor test measures HCG levels. HCG levels are not accurate predictors of multiple pregnancies, so don't worry yourself about that. Also, HCG levels vary person to person, pregnancy to pregnancy, so they're not accurate predictors of how far along you are.

You should definitely start taking prenatals, if you're not already doing so.

As for foods to avoid: Mayo Clinic

Congratulations!!!

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

I found out I was pregnant the 3rd week of September and I was seen by my OB 2 weeks later and I was about 7-8 weeks pregnant, so what you were told is normal.

You can always call back and state you are not taking prenatal vitamins and need a recommendation on what to take (they may want you on a prescription strength rather than OTC).

In the meantime, stay calm, be patient and don't stress. Oh - and start drinking lots and lots of water! Congrats on the BFP!

8 weeks is totally normal for the OB to see you

i found the clearblue easy test with the date range was not accurate for me this pregnancy - it put me a week ahead of where i actually was based on numerous drs appts

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

my OB takes me in as soon as I get a BFP to take blood and confirm the pregnancy, then a sonogram at about 6-7 weeks, then finally the first OB appointment at 8-9 weeks.

This does not seem to be the norm though.

a few reasons they don't see you....they can't see much on a sono until then, You don't share blood with the baby that early, and if something is wrong and you are going to miscarry there is very little a dr can do.

Newly pregnant and confused?

Yup totally normal and definitely stinks!!! I saw dr for DS at 8w and for DS2 at 10w (earliest they would take me). I called back and asked for a prenatal script since they wouldn't see me yet, and asked for a list of dos and donts bc like you I feel like they should tell you these things!!!! LOL

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

I had very bad cramping early so my dr saw me at 5 weeks to make sure everything was ok. At that appointment, I saw the baby and saw the heart pumping. He drew blood and my levels were all normal. Then I was told to come back in two weeks which I was 7 weeks and then the baby grew from last time and then we heard the heartbeat.

For your own peace of mind, tell your dr you want confirmation and just a general consultation. You don't have to have a sonogram, but at least blood work and some information of what to take.

Start taking prenatal vitamins and increase your water intake, rest and enjoy this journey =)

Congrats!

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

I'm guessing you took the clearblue weeks estimator test? If it said 3+ weeks that would mean you are about 5 weeks now. It counts from ovulation and your dr. will date from your last period. It is pretty common for most dr's to see you around 8 weeks. My ob will confirm with blood right away, then schedule a sono for sometime around weeks 6-7 and then the first real ob appt. is at 8.

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

Same OB I go to. Completely normal not to see you till 8 weeks. Most offices won't see you until then unless there is a problem.

Its normal not to be seen by on OB until around 8 weeks unless you are known to have previous issues/be high risk.

Re: Newly pregnant and confused?

With my DS they told me the exact same thing...8 weeks minimum....However, I was going to florida to visit my mom and wanted them to confirm it with a blood test because I didn't want to spread the news if it were a false positive. They gave me an appointment at about 5.5 weeks for BW but would not do a sono...which I was fine with.

This time around, I was seeing an RE so they have been following me every couple of days....

When were you due for your period? Did you get 3+ weeks only 2 days past your missed period?

Was your last "period" normal flow?

Either way, a + is a + and on a digital its even better!!

Congrats!

My dr saw me right away both times. They did a pregnancy test to confirm, gave me a bunch of papers (do's and dont's) and made an appointment for when I will be 6 weeks for first sono.
