Why is it so hard to get an appt. with a child behavior therapist? Anyone have a recommendation?
DS is having frustration issues and needs someone to help him build some coping strategies for when he gets upset. I've called a couple of people and they don't return calls.
What is wrong with these people. If you aren't taking new patients just let me know.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a child therapist?
Thanks

One of the social workers I work with just wrote and published an amazing book for kids on anger and frustration! She is awesome and I found the book to be very helpful with my DD. You can even email her through her website for strategies and suggestions. She is a wonderful person and amazing with kids.

You can check with your school, most have psychologists or behavior therapist on staff. They may be able to help. We go to LIJ for DD. We use the dev ped but they also have behavior therapist.

I work for the health system and called LIJ for an appt in the fall. Earliest is not till mid April. Of course I took it, but it's not easy and I had to constantly call before I got someone on the phone.

Thanks I ran into similar when we initially went the private route. I can make a rec depending where you are located.

I don't work in the health system but I have never had an issue. We always get appointments within 2 months and someone always answers the phones. They are actually expanding their services, hired about 4 new doctors and adding permanent staff at the Commack office since they are getting inundated with calls due to the dismantling of the Cody Center.

My initial appt is in the NHP location but the wait time was similar for Commack. I will ask when we go to the intake about the next steps. Maybe it's quicker once you're an established patient.

I think your right....also for the future, which really doesn't help any of us lol, but they are going to start a new department to focus on young children first diagnosed to explain what is going on and what services the parents should be seeking. Also but starting a new department for this, it will alleviate a lot of the extended wait times for appointments. I think it's a great department to start and will help a lot of folks just starting out in this process.

Cohen's Developmental and Behavioral dept said they do not work with kids not diagnosed with ADD or Autism. They said for kids with frustration issues should go to their psychiatric hospital.

They wouldn't deal with the social/emotional aspect of ADHD or autism. You would need to work with a counselor such as a social worker or psychologist. They would teach him coping strategies and help him deal with his emotions and his response to triggers in his environment. How old is your DS? If he is school aged, you should contact the school social worker. She can work with him in school and give you strategies to use at home. She (or he) might be able to refer you to a private counselor too. You can also contact your insurance company and find out who their in network providers are.

DS does not haave ADD or Autism but does have anger management/frustration issues. The school psychologist did give us some names of therapists but none have called back. The one our pediatrician gave us still hasn't called back and its been 3 weeks since i called. Its scary picking someone out of the blue...I'd rather get a recommendation but it seems everyone I call is too busy or not taking new patients.

Can the school help with making phone calls? This helped when I was trying to find an OT last year for DS. I only got a response when the school called some providers. I also am a LMSW but for adults and I have found that providers are a lot more responsive to me when I make the referral, then they are to parents or clients. It's taken more seriously I think when it comes from a professional. Plus, professionals often have inside contacts.
