So many helpful comments for the most part... I think I know how we will proceed.

See if your town has a gymnastics program. Ours does and it's by contract with one of the schools that usually charges a lot more. Plus, you can go month to month.

I wonder if the studio would let you do something like work study if you spoke to them about your situation? My yoga studio does this: people work the front desk and clean the studio and get free classes in return.

DS only went to gymnastics temporarily but the place we went to I believe gave you till then end of the quarter session to pay off the balance.

I do understand your struggle; this is one of those things I'd be torn with as a parent too, especially if they are good at it and could potentially be helpful for them someday. (I.e. Getting on a professional team, colleges, opening their own studio). But at the same time food and mortgage comes first and they will be disappointed but eventually in life will hopefully understand.

Sad 5 year old, money and gymnastics related

I know it's hard!!! I'm sorry. This is why my DS never could participate in activities either. I feel bad when he sees kids doing sports and stuff.

Why does everything have to be so expensive???

I was also going to suggest bartering with the gym to see if you can get her tuition reduced and in turn work at the desk, clean, help coach little ones, volunteer for their Summer camp program (if the gym has one).

I completely understand what you are saying. I know for my own child, she would also be upset if she had to quit her gymnastics team. Another option is to try to find a less expensive gym that offers what you need. I know there is a wide range in what gyms charge these days. I have never seen a town gymnastics program through. The Girl Scouts used to offer programs at local gyms that seemed a little less expensive. I'm not sure if they still offer that though. Hang in there, hopefully it will all work out Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Sad 5 year old, money and gymnastics related

Well, I think you can find a way to make it work like everyone else is suggesting or you can come to terms with the disappointment and teach your daughter that sometimes life is unfair. When I was little my mom was laid off and had to go back to school because no where would hire her without a degree. That meant all of my activities had to stop. I loved gymnastics, but it was no longer an option for me. I learned that my parents just couldn't do everything for me and that it sucked, but I survived. Then, when I got Into middle school, I joined those teams since they were free. And life moved on and I learned that disappointment happens. Im sorry though. I know how hard it is when your kids are disappointed. Chat Icon

Re: Sad 5 year old, money and gymnastics related

Is it just Gymnastics for your one DD? Or Dance for your younger dd?

YMCA has a hardship assistance program I just recently read about. You have to fill out the application and list your finances, things like that, etc, to apply. What about that?I don't believe they have gymnastics but they have many other programs.

"FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The Y is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, income, background or race, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. To this end, the YMCA of Long Island provides financial assistance for those who may not be able to afford the full cost of programs and services. This is only possible thanks to the generous individuals who donate to our Annual Support Campaign.

Financial assistance is determined on a case-by-case basis, and factors in total household income, number of dependents, and individual circumstances. Assistance is available all YMCA branch locations across Long Island. Funds can be used for membership and/or program fees, including after-school care, summer day camp, and programs for which additional fees apply, such as sports or aquatics. Please note, the need for financial assistance and rewards are reassessed on a regular basis.

Download a confidential application. Please complete all the fields and supply the requested supporting documentation. You can bring your completed application to the Member Services Desk."

. The Y is a good resource. I had a former client get a membership there for a song because she was on a limited income.

Definitely look into the YMCA programs. I am in Queens but our YMCA has gymnastic classes and a team for a FRACTION of the cost compared to other gyms. The YMCA also has scholarships and hardship assistance.

Re: Sad 5 year old, money and gymnastics related

IMO... money should be going for essential things like food, shelter, clothing, healthcare. Sports and activities are not essential especially at 5. It's tough because we all want our kids to be happy and thrive at what they're good at. I'm sure there will be other opportunities at another given time.
