SO sick of brown grass!!!

Every year I try a little "more" to help get my grass green. My front lawn faces south and it is soooo ugly/brown/etc! my back lawn faces north and gets "fertilized" by the dogs...it is way nicer. My neighbor across the street has a nice north facing lawn as well. not sure if that matters

I did seed in the fall this past year (never before)
Now i will do step 1...
etc

but i need MORE than that. HELP! Anyone!? :)

Re: SO sick of brown grass!!!

Do you have sprinklers? if so, are they covering everything well? You may need to water more. My DH waters the crap out of our lawn.

Maybe ask your neighbors what they use to keep their lawns looking good.

yes i have sprinklers, they were fixed last year so they go all around. ETA- before that they generally worked, and they cross over each other so the ones that didnt work shouldnt be an issue-- the backyard didnt work right and it's way greener.

We haven't turned them on yet this year.

I've asked the neighbor and tried what he suggested and it still didnt work for me.... he is also retired and takes care of his lawn every single day. They dont even have sprinklers!!

But our lawns looked so different even right after the snow melted :(

I know it takes time but we havent seen ANY improvement over the years :(

Try Scott's Lawn Care for a maintenance package. My BIL uses them and his lawn is amazing.

what kind of grass did you seed?
we just moved into a home and noticed our lawn was by far the worst on the block. we then found out it is because it is zoysia grass, which from what we have been told by gardeners, it stays brown longer then most other grasses but will eventually turn green in the warmer weather.
we are watering the lawn every other day right now when its not raining and using some scotts products to help

We just went over our whole lawn with a rake, to rake up the dead stuff that was matted down, then we put down seed (this was about 2 weeks ago) - the seed is starting to grow. We also turned on our sprinklers to make sure the new seed got enough water.

Re: SO sick of brown grass!!!

Our backyard faces south and we had the exact same problem. No matter what I did to try and grow grass it never took. We finally had sod laid down (sod thrives in sunlight) and installed IGS for regular watering. That worked! That was a few years ago. If you can afford it, go with sod.

this is what we did last year, planning to try it again. will probably do more "seed" than step 1

Does the lawn ever turn green? Like someone mentioned above, you may have zoysia grass, which turns straw like and brown when the weather is cold. Since it's a warm weather grass, zoysia grows in green eventually, just much later than many other grass types

it's never really really green. some places are always dead and some places its sorta green now, the rest looks dead. my neighbor has a big dead spot this year i think cause of the snow, but the rest of his is medium green, and will be really nice in a month or so (based on previous years)

ETA- can someone recommend a good "new" seed brand?

I literally just read something about using epsom salt on your lawn to make it greener.
