How to approach someone about a job?
I am looking for a new job. A "friend of a friend" told me about an opening at a firm I am interested in. I do not know the person who gave me the info about the opening. He told me who to contact - it's someone that I "know of" and have had a few brief dealings with, because we work in the same field, but I am not sure if he knows who I am. Do I call and say, "hi, XX told me you are looking to hire and suggested that I give you a call. . ." Do I just email my resume saying, "XX told me about an opening with your firm. . . " ?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I would probably start with an email and introduce yourself again and say something along the lines of you had enjoyed working with them on XYZ before.
I personally feel cold calls put people on the spot too much and can come off as pushy. (They used to annoy me especially when I was a busy manager).
Depending on their response, then maybe it would be appropriate to follow up with a phone call.

You can also try LinkedIn. If you are both members, sometimes contacting them that way works well.

Yeah Linked In is great. Almost everyone I know is on there.
