Hair Coloring Issue

I started dying my hair a few months ago, first doing at home and then trying different salons. My natural color is like a very light brown. Every time I dye it, it keeps turning shades of red. It looks very brassy and I hate it! The last time I went they did 2 shades darker than my natural color and it still looks reddish.
I'd love to be like a dirty blonde with no sign of reds! Is there any hope!? Anyone else have a similar issue?

Re: Hair Coloring Issue

I have light brown hair naturally, but I've been doing blonde for years. Every once in a while I will go back brown, but then miss my blonde.
For me to be a blonde I have to get highlights done at a salon. I have been that brassy color as well or red and didn't like it. Only way to get it a nice blonde is highlights and toner. I do half head.

My hair does this too, you really need to strip down below the red in order to get blonde without hints of red... You really need to have it done at a salon.

Re: Hair Coloring Issue

You need to find a REALLY good colorist. I have found that some people are just not colorists. They can be GREAT hairstylists, do awesome cuts and styles, but color is such a different animal.
It's all about chemistry and it's also an art.
See if you can find a salon that has a colorist who just does that. Only color.
I have destroyed my hair with people who didn't' know what they were doing with color and when I found someone who did it was like night and day!

Most browns have red pigment and that's what your seeing. A good colorist shouldn't have this issue.

A million times this. I dye my hair from black to auburn/medium brown every 6-8 weeks. I go to Laura Jean at JC Penney in RF Mall. She is a pro colorist and one of the few hairdressers who know how to analyze your base pigment and use the right dye for it.

Re: Hair Coloring Issue

I can't justify the expense of a pro anymore so I do it myself.

It tends to last a a few weeks and then I notice the reddish tints coming out.

At that point, my roots need a touch up anyway so I redo.

I have had several stylists comment that I do a great job and have good color even without me bringing it up so I don't think it probably looks all that bad.

I always keep as close to my natural color though.

Re: Hair Coloring Issue

When you get it done, you have to really stress that your hair tends to come out red. Mine does also. Right now, for the first time ever, I'm just going with it because I like this one specific shade we tried. I finally found ways for it not to come out red, but when I did that for too long, it looked too ashy. I now alternate between doing it myself and going to the salon. After a while, you learn what you need and it's easier to do it yourself but I am glad I went to salons at the beginning. I know I won't stick with this color forever and I will go to a salon when I want to go back to a more ashy color. Also, I agree that some hairdressers don't know color as well as others.
