If this was your kitchen...
How would you renovate it and plan the layout? We are closing on our house tomorrow and I'm already dreaming of how I will redo the kitchen I'm coming from a much smaller house with a wonderful, beautiful kitchen with a 6' island, so this is definitely a buzz kill. I'm just not sure how to work the space! Any ideas from the pros out there? We won't be renovating the kitchen for another 3 years or so.

Here's the pic. When you say "renovate", how far are you willing to go? Can interior walls come down? Would you expand the footprint out into the yard? Would you gut the existing kitchen down to studs?

Not looking to expand out into the yard, just a basic kitchen renovation. Gut to the studs, easy access to plumbing. We are taking out the fridge surround now and removing the cabinets to do the floor (it's laminate now). We are also bringing the header up flush to the ceiling and opening up the entryway a little.

Yes. I think I would flip the stove and dishwasher at the very least.

I would definitely move the dishwasher right next to the sink. Maybe move the fridge to the wall where the dishwasher is now, add cabinets to the other wall, and do a slightly bigger island.

Definitely flip the stove and dishwasher. I would also remove the island and place one so that it faces the camera in this picture. That way you open up a nice space in the kitchen. I like a large granite island with seating space for 4. People love to gather in the kitchen

I agree with all of this. I think flipping the island will make it look spacier. I'd do lighter cabinets, too.

Re: If this was your kitchen...
I would put in light wood or white cabinets it would make the room appear bigger.
Another option with your stove is to do a stove top on the counter or on the island and and do a wall oven ( I love wall ovens!)
you may want to have your cabinets go to the ceiling , you have a lot of wasted space with that sofit.
I wouldn't move the island you will disrupt the flow of going from one room to another. you can extend it though and make it a little longer.

I'm sure you're aware, but gutting to the studs is not basic, it's a HUGE job, and I'm just in the final stages of it.
I agree with the others, definitely go lighter with the cabinets, either lighter wood or white. Flip the range & dishwasher, having the dishwasher next to the sink is clutch. I'd have other ideas too, I'm sure, It's just hard to see the rest of the room, I like the over range microwave as a space saver so you don't have to have it on the counter, it also adds a little more space above the range versus cabinets. Are you sticking with gas oven/range? If not, or even so, I LOVE the idea of having it at the island instead of in with the cabinets, it looks like you might have space for that. Def do cabinets to ceiling, lots of wasted space otherwise. It looks like you have a good basic set up to begin with, which is nice.

Whats in the room you are standing in?
Standing in the breakfast nook, and the formal dining room is on the other side of the kitchen, through the entryway that we're opening up.

It's kind of like a false wall/homemade pantry out of wainscoting. It's all coming out.
I want off white, kind of distressed cabinets that go to the ceiling with crown molding, all stainless appliances. Double wall oven, 6 burner cooktop, bottom freezer fridge. I feel like this layout doesn't work. I would also be willing to lose some space in the breakfast nook. The walls you see to the left and right in the forefront of the pic are also coming out. It's kind of like an archway (breakfast nook was an addition).
