paying for private room
I had a private room with both of my LOs and I think it was worth it. (The first time was a double room and I didn't have a room mate, second time was a private room).
Especially the first time around. My DS was in NICU for the first 48 hours. I would have been very upset if I had to room with someone who had their baby with them and I couldn't have mine.

Re: paying for private room
I would say pay for it.
My sister gave birth and she had to share. The lady she was with was coughing the whole time and her son who visited was sneezing non-stop. At first she said it was allergies but she later told the doctor she "Caught a little cold from her son" She freaking had bronchitis!
By the time my sister got home all she wanted was peace and quiet.

We just paid 250 a night and it was worth every single penny. I would have paid anything.
