What's with paying to have a private room??

I live out of state (in Milwaukee) and it's unheard of NOT to have a private room after you deliver. Every hospital here only offers private rooms and there is no extra fee.
I always read on here that women have to pay extra to have a private room, otherwise they have a "roommate" I'm assuming??
I just feel so bad when I read about it because I can't imagine having to share a room with a stranger while recovering from such an intimate moment in your life. Is it a lot of $$$ to reserve a private room? I'm just curious what it's like I guess and wondering how you ladies feel about it...

Re: What's with paying to have a private room??

Some hosptials here have all private rooms like you describe. I know Stonybrook does and a few others in Nassau County.

At the hospital I am at now it is $210 a night for a private room!Chat Icon
INSANITY I know.
My DH really wanted to do it for me though- I guess we can call it a 'push present'? Chat Icon

And you are right- it is SUCH an intimate recovery- I mean my bathroom looked like a crime scene yesterday after I just went to pee- I can't imagine having to share.
SO much is going on with your body etc
Not to mention the baby in the room, your guests coming to visit, etc

Even my L&D nurse said how crazy she thought it was that they charged that much for a private room- her words- this is not the Hilton!
And the kicker- for all that money they don't even throw in the TV service- we had to pay to activate that too! Chat Icon
At least at a $210 a night hotel you get the TV service thrown in for free!

Re: What's with paying to have a private room??

My hospital only has ONE private room and they save it for ladies who had a complicated delivery. All the other rooms have 2 ladies per room and each bathroom has 4 ladies per bathroom.Chat Icon It is a nightmare, but oh well. I usually get the he ll out of there as soon as I can possibly be released so it's not so bad.

I am in NY (but not the city or LI) and we also have private rooms at no charge.

The room you are admitted to is the one you labor and deliver and recover and basically yours for your stay.
If you have a c/s, they roll you a few doors down to the OR and then right back to your room for recovery. I remember the room even had a mini fridge in it because DH put ginger ale and my cord blood stuff in there!

They said in the event it ever got "busy" they might have to double up, but I don't know anyone thats ever had to share.

We live in the NYC area. I think it's normal to just charge to breathe here. Chat Icon

I think its just a matter of population. There are going to be more women delivering here than in less populated areas. I know in LIJ it is not unheard of to have six people in the room.

My whole thing is, its only a few days and then you get to go home. It isn't something that I even think about since it is so common here. Don't get me wrong, if someone wanted to pay for me to have a private room I wouldn't turn it down BUT it isn't a reason I would specifically choose a hospital.

That is a BARGAIN!
Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

When I delivered my 1st Chat Icon almost five years ago, I was at LIJ and paid $300/night I believe. I stayed four nights. I would do that again a million times over!

A year and a half later, while pregnant with my 2nd Chat Icon , I discovered they jacked the prices up to $500/night! I opted to keep that little tidbit to myself and when my DH went down to procure the room after the birth he was like Chat Icon Chat Icon (meanwhile I was like Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ). He told me he only paid for two nights and then when it came down to it I had to decide between leaving after 3 nights (instead of 4) or moving to a roommate room for the next two nights. I left after three.

Well, this time, I am at North Shore and I believe it's up to $650/night now!!! I really can't in good conscience do that again...esp. for four nights. Unfortunately for me, NS is making ALL rooms private in 2011. My OB said, "So, when you come back for your 4th..." I said, "Yeah, I'll have a private room after that...in the mental hospital." Terrible, terrible...

Re: What's with paying to have a private room??

I couldn't justify paying for a private room with my 1st. I didn't have terrible roomates (I had 2), it was just that they joined me at 3am with no one, including the staff, pretending to try not to wake me.Chat Icon

I am seriously considering it now ONLY because Winthrop changed their visiting policy. I LOVED that a million people couldn't be in the room with my brand new baby. I LOVED that they all had to look through the glass to see him. I especially LOVED that my roommate's visitors had no direct contact with my child. Now that's all changed and they can bring in their coughs and germs and be standing feet from my baby. I do NOT love thatChat Icon

I'm thinking I'll take my chances day 1 and see where and with whom I end up with and if it's miserable....I'll ask for the private room.

Same for me. I am delivering at Ny Presbyterian and it's like $700. I heard it tough to even get a private room and there can be wait lists.

That's the price I've been hearing... but I also hear about NYC hospitals. I'll take a vacation in a REALLY great hotel instead.

It is a space issue. Most hospitals will spread out their patients (one per room) until the rooms fill and then they start with 2 per room... ect. So you COULD get away with a "free" private room.

TRUE: they fill up at that price. It's all about market value.

My OOS friends feel the same way.

I live in NY, not in LI or NYC either, and delivered in NJ. It was $250 for a guaranteed private room but, they try their hardest not to give people roommates in the double rooms.

I was fine with a double room until I was induced. I felt so yucky and was so tired I was really hoping I'd still get my own room, and I did.

Re: What's with paying to have a private room??

I paid an additional $500/night for a private room with DS#1.

I could not imagine having to share a room with someone. I told DH this was the one "must have" and he completely agreed.

I am doing the same for DD. We set aside FSA money especially for this purpose.

Wow! These prices are incredible!!! You could stay in a REALLY posh hotel for that kind of money. Chat Icon

I am delivering in Raleigh, NC and all of our rooms are private. I was just taking that for granted, but will be very thankful for it now!

I don't think it's a matter of more populated areas vs less populated areas. Where I delivered DD and were I'm delivering this baby is not in a less populated area at all, and the entire maternity ward is private rooms.

In fact, many if not most of the hospitals here in my area have all private rooms for maternity. (I'm in NJ)

Re: What's with paying to have a private room??

When NSUH opens their women's center next year they will have all private rooms. I got really lucky and had a private room because my FIL works at NSUH and the staff loves him. I could not imagine being in a 2 person or 4 person room recovering from a c-section though I had prepared myself for it. I'm so grateful it wasn't necessary.

i delivered at winthrop and paid $220 per night for a private room.

i had a roomate the first night and then moved to a private room once it was available. That $220 was the best money I ever spent Chat Icon It is a shame that not all hospitals offer private rooms for all.

Some hospitals do offer private rooms standard. Just depends on the hospital Chat Icon

I completely agree! I can't believe the prices that they are charging for these rooms. I live in the DC area and our cost of living is the same as Long Island, but both of my local hospitals have all private rooms. I don't have to pay anything to be by myself.
