Summer "work"
If you have a 6th and 4th grader aside from reading what kind of work do you make your child do? I don't want to spend a ton on workbooks. I forgot to ask their teachers but I know I can print some math sheets online? What about writing?
Also how often do you make them do work? They will be in camp everyday all day while I work. The summer goes so fast when you work/kids have camp there isn't a lot of time to add in academics.

Re: Summer "work"
Honestly. They both get a summer reading assignment from school. So they do that. and then I don't make them do anything else during the summer. I figure they are only kids once. Let them have a carefree summer, they have so much work during the school year, and their grades are great. I let them enjoy.

Re: Summer "work"
The only thing I feel is necessary for the kid who is not struggling is to just have them read over the summer. Have them talk to you about the books they are reading.
If they are struggling, I would incorporate some math facts maybe 2x a week.
But I agree that summer if a time for them to experience and learn all the things they can't in school!

My girls will be in 2nd and 4th in September. They both have summer bridge workbooks and do a couple of pages each day. It's not torture, I promise...lol. They also read frequently. Also, they both enjoy journal writing and I think if you're going away at all, it might be nice to have them keep a travel journal too.

Re: Summer "work"
Thanks everyone. Because we go to work/camp there isn't a lot of time so we are sticking with reading only! I should have known!

Summer
It's Summer vacation, kids need a break. Reading is plenty unless your kids are struggling.

Re: Summer "work"
My kids are 7 and 8. I have them do an online math program (IXL) every day. But we do it in a fun way. The kids take turns on the computer, and while one is working the other is doing something fun (like playing Wii). They switch. They usually spend 10-15 min a day on some math review (depending on how much they annoyed me that day).
Reading is every day as well. Only 15 minutes or so....just some quiet time.
I've been doing this since they entered school and I feel it is successful because they both do really well in school.
They don't fight me on it either, they don't mind because I make it fun.

Re: Summer "work"
Ds is going into second grade. Reading 25 minutes a day. After ten consecutive days of reading he earns a small prize. We do work sheets on script and handwriting because he needs to improve his handwriting. We do science kits like making a volcano. We do clay and craft projects. I got a kiwi kit and did those science and art experiments too. We do different things on each day. I make them do about ten minutes of educational work beyond reading a day.
