Summer Day Camp

I was talking with some friends who have children a few years older than me and heard that summer day camps in Nassau County are about $6,000.00. Is this really the going rate for a lot of places? be true? Right now I am a SAHM but will be returning to work in 2-3 years and trying to figure out out expenses. I have two kids.

Definitely depends on the camp.

If it makes you feel better, figure out the hourly rate for the hours they are there.

The mini-camp sessions (not full day!) by me are about $400+/week. Town programs are a lot more reasonable but certainly not as many activities & long hours as other camps.

Re: Summer Day Camp

Does your town offer summer rec? That will be a lot less expensive. I am in Nj and four weeks of full day 9 to 4 day camp can run between $2,500 to $6,000 per child depending upon where you send them, if bussing, lunch is included and the before or after care costs more too. My neighbor is sending one child to one of the more pricy day camps and for eight weeks with before and after care, busing, and lunch is spending $12,000.

I have two kids in full day camp one going five days a week and the other going three days a week and it costs $4500 for both, including bussing but no lunch.

Ds did one week of summer rec too and that cost $150 for the week for a 1/2day program.

I am not on LI, but this is such a struggle for me. I am a single mom and work, so I NEED camp.

Luckily my son's after school program has an EXTREMELY reasonable camp. It isn't fancy and doesn't have a lot, but he seems ot like it

Summer Day Camp

Yes depending on where you send them to. Our district offers camp. 7 weeks for $955 for full day and $570 for half day. The full day is nice. They get to go to the pool every day and field trip pretty often too. Check out your town.

The prices vary greatly.
Nassau County offers camp programs in their parks for about 750.00 for 8 weeks. It's a short day 9:00 -3:00 but they offer before and after care for an additional fee.

Woodmount East Coast and Camps r Us are about 400-450 a week, there are others in this price range. These are private camps usually set up In a school and only operate over the summer.

Camps like Maplewood, South Shore, Big Chief that have their own campus and offer year round preschool/daycare programs take a big jump in price. These are the 6000 or so per summer camps

Then you have the specialty camps likecFuture Stars and Hofstra Sports Camps. Hofstra is about 1200 for a 2week session.

And then there is Coleman, LUHI and Friends Academy, probably the most expensive day camps on LI

You'll find something that works for you.

Like others have said, prices vary drastically, and you get what you pay for. Our district has a cheap camp, held at one of the schools, it's $100 a week for full time. No a/c, they take a field trip to the pool once a week. I've found camps that are $600 a week and they are like a kid's resort with ziplines, boating, waterslides, etc.

Re: Summer Day Camp

It depends what you are looking for.

DH and I rarely vacation and sure as hell aren't paying those prices for DS, so he can have a "mini resort".

Even if we COULD afford them.

We are fortunate that family watches DS so all they have asked is to put him in various daily activities to keep him occupied and to give them a break for a few hours a day.

I've found a local church school works well and we also send him to soccer for an hour once a week.

Monday is library day and family is also taking him to other fun activities at least once a week too.

Find out what the school district offers too, in addition to the town.

Mine advertised late (I'm sure for a reason), but they offer FREE half day camp for Pre-k for about a month or so 4 days a week.

If you are creative, and network with other parents, you can find a lot of things to do.

My DS goes to another camp, similar to South Shore, in N. Bellmore and it's about that in terms of price. I think it was $3200 for 7 weeks and it's 5 days, 9:30-4. That includes lunch, snacks, etc. He doesn't take a bus, since I live practically right around the corner, and have flexible hours to drive him. But I think busing was an extra $800, something like that, so it would have been $4K with busing. He's 5 (entering K in September).

For me, it's totally worth it because my DS is an only child and the type of child who wants to be busy ALL day and be around other kids. It's also helpful because I can get a lot of work done while he's at camp. The camp has an inground pool so he gets swimming, and they do tons of sports, and other fun activities (musical theater, arts and crafts, color wars, etc.).

Some of the more expensive camps have larger grounds and more elaborate activities (horseback riding! zip lines!), but I feel like that is more than what my son needs.

Like anything else, camp prices vary depending on what you want/need. Some are the premiere camps, some are more middle ground, and some are more basic. I know many families who send their kids to the town rec programs, which are pretty affordable. I also have friends that sent their kids to the camps at local parks, like the Wantagh Park. So there are lots of options, depending on your budget and other preferences.

Summer Day Camp

Prices of camps are expensive but there is a range from pricey (like any daycare) to extremely pricey. Depends on what you can pay and comfortable with for your child. I did a mish mosh of camp for my DS to save money and keep him interested this summer. The camps ranged from $160 - 240/ week.

I have him the following:
*2 weeks of Basketball camp (8:30 - 3)
*1 week of soccer camp (9-3)
*1 week of a Multi sport camp (9-3)
*4 weeks of YMCA camp, 4 days (8:30 - 4:30) - they take them on trips and go swimming etc. YMCA also has a kid camp where they stay onsite and it's cheaper for 3-5.
*I also did a dance camp for July on the day he's home with me which wa $60 for 1hr and a half

My total camp cost for the 8 weeks came out to about $1900. Which I don't think is good when you divide it up and all the fun he's been having going to the pool, beach and playing sports.

Re: Summer Day Camp

my DD goes to Big Chief - full day - 8 week program and it is about 4400.00 for the program. She gets a choice of hot lunch or sandwich lunch with that every day. And a lot of trips are included - Nickerson Beach, rock climbing, horseback riding, fishing, bowling, archery, Skating, plus swimming lessons. It is so worth it and she loves it. They also have bus service- pick up and drop off at the house, included in that price. You can also do extended house, I think it is 7:30-5:30 or 6, not sure, but you can't use the bus service if you do that. I love too that they post pics on their website and Facebook each day so you get to see how much fun the kids are having. My DD is 10, she loves it and this is her 5th summer there, and she wants to keep going until she ages out, which I think she can keep going until the summer before 8th grade.

Re: Summer Day Camp

My son is 5 yrs old goes to sports camp in Ronkonkoma. It is $1600 for 10 weeks full day 9-5 plus another $250 to include lunch for the full 10 weeks. This has been a great option for us. they also have before and after care available for $5 per 1/2 hr.

you can pay weekly $200 plus $25 for lunch but you get a discount for paying for the full summer at once.

There are also 1/2 day options.

here are all the different options
