How is it decided what teacher a child will get for the following school year?

Who/how is it decided what teacher a child gets each year in elementary school? At the end of the school year, does a child's current teacher have input/help in picking a child's teacher for the following school year? Is it based on grades, state test scores, behavior, etc.? Who exactly decides which teacher a child will get? Do teachers have a meeting and discuss the children one by one? Does the principle/vice principle have any input? Is it different for each school district? Is it ever just random?

TIA!

In my district it's basically random. We sort the kids into groups based on how many sections we will have. We do try to balance the groups based on reading and math levels. The principal assigns the teachers later on and tweaks the groups as needed.

in my district, we sit down as a grade level and sort all the kids in groups (i.e. average students, above average students, students that receive services, etc.) We also have to look at gender and race. We also try to take into account what teacher will be a good fit for that particular student and/or any parental or teacher requests. From there we group the classes making sure that they are balanced in the above areas. Some classes may be heavier on students with special needs because it is easier to have a group of them in one class scheduling wise for the resource room teacher and related service providers. Often if we are stuck, we go to the principal for additional input. We spend several hours on this process so in my school, it is not that random, and definitely not random if you're an atypical student.

This is how our district handles it as well.

Every school has different reasons for doing it a different way. Sometimes, gender balance even plays a role in addition to what everyone else said.
In the past, names were drawn from a hat in elementary schools! I couldn't imagine.......

Dr. Steve Kussin has an insightful podcast about this topic. He's great, check it out. Not sure if that one is on this page, but here is his podcast page......

We do this, minus the race part. We do try to balance the gender. Also bc of scheduling we can only have a certain number of ESL, SETSS etc. on each "team" so that plays a role as well, we mostly try to balance level based on what elem school provide and state scores, 1 being best student 3 being worst.
