Has anyone moved after DC started school?

DS is entering 1st grade. He is a very shy kid but loves his school, hasn't formed super strong friendships yet but has had play dates, likes kids from his class etc. We are considering moving out east (seriously considering Speonk). He would be going to a MUCH smaller school. Like 1 or 2 teachers per grade level. District has a good rep. When we mentioned possibly moving he got a little upset saying he likes it here. I feel like kids are resilient and he will make new friends etc. but I'm also having huge guilt about it and worrying if he hates it, feels lonely etc. I feel like in the end we can live a better life out there. Less congestion, more land, less tax, bigger house etc. Anyone BTDT or have advice?

I have not, tho I may have to. But I feel that it is important to do what is important for your family as a whole. He will adjustChat Icon

Not BTDT but be sure to sign your kids up for different activities and sports. It's a good way to meet other kids and to form friendships. DS has made friends from library programs, too. GL!

I think kids are resilient at a young age.

DS was in a different nursery, different pre-k, has been with different camp kids and will be with different kids in K.

I'm not worried.

As someone who was with the same kids K-12, I welcome him changing it up and being around different people. Chat Icon

Re: Has anyone moved after DC started school?

We moved last Oct when my son was in 1st grade. He LOVES his new school (which only has 1-2 teachers per grade). I think his previous school w/7 kindergarten classes was too big and unwelcoming. He didn't have a great k teacher and was generally turned off to first grade in the old school b/c he knew we would be moving -- we were supposed to close in the summer but open permits pushed our closing back.

Now, he loves school (even if he doesn't like homework) and wanted to buy all of the school shirts possible. lol

Kids are resilient and at that age, he'll make great friends quickly. We tried to attend as many birthday parties as possible so that we could get to know the kids and parents faster. Good luck!

I changed districts with my daughter between pre k and k (we moved from Elmont to Hicksville) between 2nd & 3rd (I got married and moved to East Meadow) and again between 5th & 6th (we bought a house and moved from EM to Levittown)

She survived each time and hasn't had a problem adjusting. She will be entering 10th in a few weeks.

Thanks for the feedback! We won't be making a decision for probably a few months but I made a pros and cons list lol. I agree and do think in the end he would adjust just fine. Ugh mommy guilt!

We are in the process of buying a home in the neighboring district. I do worry about making new friends. DS will be entering 2nd grade and DD will be entering kindergarten. We will only be 3 minutes from our old home, so hopefully we will still see our old friends but I know it won't be the same.

Re: Has anyone moved after DC started school?

I changed districts when I was going through my divorce. Kids are resilient . Just sign your DC up for different sports so they can meet new friends before going into the new school. I did this and it was awesome because both of my boys knew kids already when they went in ....

I know it's a hard decision but I promise you, kids bounce back !
