First Day of School -- Kindergarten
DD is starting kindergarten this year. I am a SAHM for this year as we just had twins. I don't want to miss out on her first day of school experience as I probably won't get to do it with my other kids.
She will be bussed. Would you just put her on the bus and let her go? Should I follow the bus and then walk her to her classroom? Should I drive her to school the first day?
She is so ready for kindergarten and she is so excited about the bus, so I am not worried about separation anxiety or setting it up so that she thinks I will be there every day, but I don't want to miss out on this special day. What do other people do?

Re: First Day of School -- Kindergarten
We are putting DS on the bus and that's it. I won't meet him there for 2 reasons: I won't be doing it everyday so I don't want to start with something that I know I can't continue and, as a teacher, I've helped out with the first day of school arrivals and the kids whose parents drop them off generally have a harder time saying good-bye/entering the classroom than the kids who have just gotten off the bus. I think it really just depends on your kid and what their attitude or reaction will be if you do one versus the other.

Re: First Day of School -- Kindergarten
I'm going in late his first day of school, but only to see him get on the bus for the first time. I won't be following the school bus or meeting him there to take him to class.

Re: First Day of School -- Kindergarten
Are there any districts on LI that even let parents accompany their kid to the classroom door? All the SDs where I have worked won't let the parents past the entry way because of security reasons (for drop off and pick up).

First Day of School -- Kindergarten
Our school does not allow parents to walk the kids into class. All the K teachers meet the kids at the bus circle and all walk to class together.
Just watch her get on the bus and take a TON of pictures! oh and from a BTDT, the bus is always late the first day of school, mostly because of all the picture taking lol. Good luck!!

my DS went into kindergarten last year and he takes the bus. Like PP said I just took tons of pics and sent him on the bus. He had an awesome day and no separation anxiety! He's actually begging me to go to first grade lol Good luck!!

Re: First Day of School -- Kindergarten
I drove mine to school for the 1st day. We aren't allowed to walk them to their classrooms though :(
Many parents in our district do follow the bus though. It was funny to see the parents running to catch the bus to see the kids get off of the buses.

I believe South Huntington actually lets parents ride on the bus w/ the kids on the first day. Then they accompany them into the classroom for a 1/2 day. It's nice but eventually you have to cut the cord

The district I work in always let the parents walk the kids into the classroom. I have taken many a picture with students on the first day and I teach 5th grade!
The district I work in also does a half day for the first day for kindergarteners.

Re: First Day of School -- Kindergarten
Ok not sure what people do in you area but in mine (we are walkers so I see the arrival aspect). Parents take pictures of their kid getting on the bus. Then they drive to school and take pictures of them getting off. At our school the teachers or principal meets the bus and the kids walk in together. Parents are not allowed inside and we cannot walk them to their classroom. They wait in the lobby and are sent in groups. We say goodbye outside.
I think it is overkill bc some kids look upset day two or three when their moms don't meet them. Others don't acknowledge their moms bc they are so excited. You have to know your kid and what others do. Our school is only K-1st so it works. My older one is taking her first bus this year but it is a 2-5th and no way could I meet the bus.
I take pictures at the house leaving their first day. Might take one of her getting on the bus. But hey I see parent videoing their first walk to kindergarten so you have to do what works for you.

We are South Huntington and this is what we are doing. The first day is a half day for orientation. One parent can ride the bus with DD and the other parents can meet them at the school. Then we walk to the class together. We are are supposed to bring in pictures of her favorite things and we are going to decorate a folder together. This folder is supposed to inspire her to write things. She can bring in pictures, ticket stubs, menus of her favorite restaurant. I thought it was cute.

Re: First Day of School -- Kindergarten
Mine will be in before/after care at his current daycare and getting the bus from there normally -
But for the first day we're going to take him and pick him up - it's only one day

First Day of School -- Kindergarten
I'm going to put my son on the bus the first day but i will meet him up there because the kindergarten kids will be bought into the library by their parents and the teachers will pick them up from there (just on the first day). I don't want my kid to be one of the only ones without a parent the first day. There's is also no way he can bring all the school supplies to school by himself the bag is really heavy.

First Day of School -- Kindergarten
I drive my daughter everyday, but many parents follow the bus on the first day, MANY! I see them all lined up on the side of the road watching their kids get off. If mine road the bus, I probably would have done the same. We are allowed to walk the kids the lobby and down to the cafeteria if they get there before the start of school. But not to the classroom.

Re: First Day of School -- Kindergarten
We walked him to the bus stop, took a picture of him getting on the bus and waved good-bye.
We met his teacher the day before and saw his classroom. We also took a bus ride so he knew what to expect the following day. I doubt our school would allow parents to walk their kids to the classroom on the first day or any day. It's nice though that we have the opportunity to meet his teacher and go into the classroom each year the day before school starts.
