Re: So excitied our Solar is getting installed today!!!!
We've had our SunNation panels for almost 7 years now. I've been recommending them to everyone I know for the last 7 years. I got my system from them when they were Sun Power System. They changed their name a few years ago.
I really like their app. I can monitor my panels on my phone, as well as through their website.

Curious, what happens with the solar panels if you need a new roof? Who takes them off/puts them back on? We will probably need a new roof in the next few years, and solar panels is something that we are interested in doing, but we haven't looked into it yet, figured we would start looking into it when we get the roof. Just wondering if we could do it sooner, and not wait for the roof to be replaced?

Most companies won't install the panels on a roof that needs replacing soon. They might make you replace the roof before the panels go up.
If you do need to replace the roofing after the panels are up, for any reason, only a certified solar panel install company should take the panels off and put them back on.

May I ask how long it took from the time you signed the contract to installation. We signed our contract a while ago and are still waiting. What town are you in? I'll assume you had to get permits.

The one company we looked into the first thing they did was inspect the roof and see that our roof will last 20 years.

Do these companies offer any financing or must you pay outright for your panels? Don't love the idea of leasing...

Congratulations on going solar!
We have a 9 K system put on our barn roof and love it. Our bills are so reasonable now, just a few dollars each time. We even had one for .99, if you can believe it.
We had Green Logic do the installation. They were the approved installer for the Sunpower panels I wanted, as Sunpower are American made in California.
LIPA helped with the financing through a rebate which was paid directly to the installer, plus we got a tax credit from Obama's Stimulus package. The system wasn't cheap, but it is paying itself off in savings.

I actually like the fact that you can see my panels from the street...
No, I don't think any installer would put panels on a north facing slope of a roof. It's not worth it at that point. You would get so little power from the panels that it would take 50 years+ for you to save enough to pay for the panels.
The roof shingles are interesting, but generate much less power than a panel. If you want solar just to have solar power, then they are good, but if you are looking into it as an investment, they aren't your best bet.
Whenever I drive around town, I always look for panels, and I'm always thinking "Ah, cool, they have solar panels, pretty awesome!"

Awesome! I have been planning to look into them (but live in NC). What kind of ROI does solar have nowadays? I know a few years back it wasn't great but I am hoping technology has improved.

So excitied our Solar is getting installed today!!!!
The cost of solar panels has come down considerably in the last few years and I believe tax credits and rebates are still available. The actual cost of each system depends on its size which is measured in kilowatts. Size varies depending on how much power you want to generate. I wanted enough to cover all of my bills. A friend who also got a system just wanted to take a bite out of hers.
Fine Homebuilding magazine's April-May 2014 issue listed the cost of a 5.16 kw solar installation in upstate New York as:
5.16 kw system Installation......................$40,640 Federal tax credit..............($7900) State tax credit.................($5000) State rebate ................ ($11,740) Energy Star rebate ..........($2580) ----------- Total cost.......................$13,420
The article said the annual cost of heating, cooling, water heating, lighting, power for appliances and electric service charges at the house was $1757 Photo voltaic production was $ 843 reducing the house's bill to $914
My 9kw system usually covers all of my power bill and on sunny days makes extra electricity which is fed into the grid for others to use - and for which we get paid very little :( Basically all we pay is for the monthly charge to be hooked up to LIPA (PSEGLI) which is around $12.
Solar panels do have to be placed where they get the most sun, which is south facing. As part of giving estimates, companies go up on your roof with a hand-held gadget that shows what exposure your panels would get.
DH did not want panels on our house roof because we have an antique house and they would have looked out of place on it, so we put them on our barn. They could easily go on a garage roof.
For HVAC, after our old oil furnace died, we got a super efficient geothermal system which is electric. (S.A. Fink Inc. in Plainview put it in.) It both heats and air conditions my house while also pre-warming my household hot water with its excess heat. My solar panels provide enough energy so that our heating and a/c bills are covered. We no longer have oil or gas bills, which is fabulous. (We have had gas heat in the past, too)
We have been saving roughly $5000 a year over our old heating system because we no longer have to buy fossil fuel. That savings means that the ROI on installing the geothermal will be less than 7 years. That never would have happened with a new oil or gas system because those fuel bills would have just kept on coming.
