Ugh! A bully on the bus *Update*

DS was in a special ed program for preschool and pre-K. He also took summer classes. I have never had any issues with him on the bus since he was 3 bc all the other kids on the bus with him were also in the special ed classes going to school. For kindergarten they felt he tested well enough to be mainstreamed, but in his class he will have a special ed teacher to work with him and still get speech. My point is he's been in small classes with kids like him with several teachers. Now he's on the bus with the mainstream kids as well since that's the direction he's moving in.
He is a pretty passive boy. Very sweet and super friendly. On the bus ride home he sits behind the driver with another little boy. I had a weird feeling about the boy a few times when he had this smirk on his face when I went to take DS off. Today the driver asked me if DS ever said anything about the boy he sits next to. I said he never did. She said to ask bc when DS went to sit with him today he said he didn't want to sit with him. Fine, I get it... kids can be mean. The driver just said it's not nice and we are all nice to each other. I thanked her for looking out for DS. SHe knows him bc she's had him over the summer and knows he's a sweet and gentle boy. Anyway, when I asked DS about the boy he said he was nice and just being silly about telling him he wants to play a game where he wants to fight him till he falls down and cries. I was so upset by this. DS doesn't really get it bc he does have some expressive and receptive delays. I was telling him the difference between mean and nice and he got that part, but kept telling me the boy is nice. Ugh! I am just not ready for this. I know I can't keep him in a bubble, but didn't think kids would be hurtful so fast.
Sorry so long and thanks for listening. I will keep an eye on him and the driver said she would to and can move his seat if needed.

**Update**
The driver moved the boy to the other side so this way she can keep an eye on the boy more. She said it wasn't just to DS, but he gets rowdy and tries to keep getting up to yell around or at other kids. It's only a kindergarten bus. DS is behind the driver like he was before and with a new boy. DS is happy anyway so the boy moving over didn't make a difference to him.

I would raise this to the school. I know you're sensitive to not keeping him "in a bubble" but at his age and in this instance it's merited.

The little boy in question, his parents should be spoken to and they should address this. I'm never one to hover or cause unecessary trouble but I would definitely speak up on this.

Re: Ugh! A bully on the bus

I am so sorry that you have to deal with this. I would say something to the teacher(s).

5yo DS just started kindergarten but he tells me some wild stories about the bus. I hope they are playing around but he always says how these kids are hitting and punching one another.

It's awful - you want to cry for them and beat the hell out of the little ******* !!! - But be grateful that he tells you, and that the bus driver lets you know as well. She's obviously looking out for him -

My kid must have inherited my ability to bottle everything up and pretend like it doesn't bother him - b/c even if I SEE something happening, he'll tell me later it wasn't a big deal or it didn't matter. Some times he speaks up, but more often than not, I see he'll back down to the bully. He's more likely to stick up for someone else, than himself (again, is that stuff inherited?)

They all want so badly to be liked, and accepted and to fit it - I just keep trying to tell my son there's a huge difference between being popular b/c eveyone sess you're nice, and fun and they want to play with you .....and being popular b/c everyone seesy you being mean and making fun of other kids so they are only nice to you so you don't do that to them - I just don't want him to be following that pied piper kid ...........

Kindergarten problems - I thought I wouldn't have to worry so much w/ boys ........and DEFINITELY not this soon !! Chat Icon

I would definitely say something. Not just for your son but for the sake of everyone involved. I am assuming the bully is in K too since he is sitting up front. The bully needs to learn at an early age that it is not acceptable behavior. My DD is in PreK and very expressive and knows what she wants and I fear she will be the mean kid. As a parent, I want to know if she is bullying anyone because I want to be able to cut it off as early as possible. I know kids can be mean and its just a part of growing up, but talking about hurting someone until he cries, thats not just kids being kids. Who knows where this little bully adapted this behavior from, but I really want to believe that his parents wouldnt accept it if they knew it was happening. I am glad that your son seems to have an exceptional bus driver!

I'm glad that they moved the boy. But someone has to talk to that kid's parents since it seems he is acting out! I hope your DS has a smooth bus ride from now on.

I agree that boy's parents should be informed.

Glad things worked our for your DS. He sounds like a sweetheart.
