Replacing wine with beer?--SUCCESS!

I have a chili recipe that calls for red wine. We don't drink wine, I have none in the house. Beer, on the other hand, we have plenty. Think I could replace the wine with beer? I was thinking a nice chocolate stout.

for a chili recipe.. i don't see the flavors of red wine or stout being anywhere near each other and i think the stout would probably taste odd in a chili.
i would just skip it altogether if you don't have red wine.

Replacing wine with beer?

I agree. Though, the chocolate stout would probably be really good for a bbq dish, like pulled bbq pork or chicken.

I don't know if I'd use a chocolate stout, but if you have something more neutral it would be fine in chili. I use beer in my chili all the time.

For chili, absolutely. It might change the flavor a little, but it will still be good. If your going to use a stout, add a little first and taste it before adding more. If you have an ale or IPA or Lager, I'd use that before the stout.

Tx, I have lots of beers to pick from, LOL.
I was thinking chocolate b/c mole is chocolate based and goes well with Mexican foods but might try something lighter. I cook with beer all the time but never as a wine "replacement", I figured it was just to add some depth.
Will let you know how it turns out

Replacing wine with beer?

I think a chocolate stout would be awesome in chili!

The recipe will have a different taste than if it was made with wine, so its definitely not a replacement...but I'd go for it!!

ITA! I cook with beer all the time. Beer in chili is great, and the chocolate stout will give it a great flavor, IMO. Tobe honest, I actually don't see red wine going well with chili, lol.

I've made chili with beer and it's DELISH!!! In the case of chili, I would substitute one for the other. If this were sauce or a specific wine dish I would not but beer works well in chili.

So, total success (even though it is tonight's dinner, made it last night so I'd have the time). DH was trying to eat a bowl of it at midnight! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

In hindsight, I think the red wine would have been too sweet, it called for some brown sugar and even with the stout I think it had a bit of a sweetness still.

So, can't wait to go home and chow down on some chili on this windy, cold and dreary day! Chat Icon

I started with this kit:
Frontier soups chili

and made the following changes:
--only used ground beef (no pork)
--no wine, used 12 oz chocolate stout (Actually added it right into the meat after it was cooked and had added the spice pack and let it simmer a while)
--used tomato sauce instead of diced tomatoes
--added 8oz beef broth b/c the beer cooked into the meat
--used dark brown sugar (it was all I had)
I think that was it.
I wanted it meatless but DH wasn't having that after I made him eat just pasta and sauce the other night. Men! Chat Icon

I soaked the beans all day then it took about 1 hour to cook the beans (prepared the meat while they cooked) then another hour with it all simmering together.
