Neurologist/adhd Questions

I took my ds to a neurologist because we suspected adhd and wanted to get him tested in case there was a problem in Kindergarten, he used to get speech and OT but he tested well at the end of preschool and they took the services away. We spoke to the doctor, he did a little exam and gave us paperwork to fill out and told us to come back in November once ds got more used to being in school. (we weren't able to get an appt. till the end of December)

I just got a call from his school that he's having a lot of problems with transitioning and impulse control so I called to see if they could see him sooner, and they put him on the list to call if there was a cancellation.

Is this normal? I guess I was hoping once he was a patient it would be easier to get an appointment. I like the doctor but if we wait that long I'm worried he'll just keep getting worse.

Any Neuro recommendations would be appreciated, or is there another doctor I should see? such as a psychologist or developmental ped or is that just the same thing?

He doesn't get OT but they said they can give him breaks in the sensory gym to try to get out some energy. Is there anything else I can do for him?

Thanks for your help! Sorry for all the questions. I feel bad for him, I don't want him to be thought of as a bad kid or start hating school.

Are you in Nassau or Suffolk? Once we were a patient, we've always been able to get an appointment with two or three weeks.

I'm in Suffolk so I don't really have anyone. A lot of people use Cohen's but I think their appts can be a wait, sorry!

You can see a psychologist in terms of diagnosing an ADHD. East End Psychological Services in Roslyn would probably get you in quickly. You can look them up on the internet. They would definitely assist in collaborating with the teacher etc and giving strategies--this is probably more than a neurologist would do. Good luck!

Only for initial intake.

Once you're an established pt it's easier and you have set appts for the year scheduled.

Before I went this route, I had DS seen by a private psychologist through my insurance.

I would try to get on the wait list for Cohen's.

Especially if there's a chance you are considering meds down the road.

I think the reason the wait is so lengthy is because this is the center that also deals with preemies/newborns.

Also we are established with a Dev Ped, not a neuro. They can still diagnose and write scripts/monitor meds.

Is there a certain doctor or program to get on the wait list for at Cohen's?

I'm right on the border of Nassau and Suffolk so I could definitely go to either.

Thanks for all the responses. They started taking him for breaks in the gym and it seemed to help.

Re: Neurologist/adhd Questions

Just wanted to let you know I got an appointment with a neurologist in cohen's in December (earliest they had). This was on the recommendation of the psychologist who did my son's CPSE Eval (we are still going through the process).

When I called cohen's they said I prob need to see the dev/behavioral pediatrician not the neurologist.
That they don't schedule over the phone. They sent a ton of paperwork that needs to be filled out and mailed back to them and then they set it up. She said as of now they are booking March (that's the soonest!).

She still scheduled the neurologist appt because the psychologist recommended it since my son shakes when he gets angry and zones out at times. But I will also be following up with dev ped. Such a process!

From what I remember, it's a lot of behavioral questionnaires. For EVERYONE involved with the child. I know they want to make sure everything being reported is consistent across the board. The DevPed also did some kind of attention test on the computer, and IQ testing.

She observed him as well. He's never been able to just sit still, and at times was climbing over her desk.

P.S. This is JMO but I feel sometimes the school is not as honest or may be comparing to other more severe cases. Also if they are on grade level, that complicates stuff too.

I know the wait is discouraging, but I'm sure you will like them a lot.

Re: Neurologist/adhd Questions

I finally sent the paperwork back to cohen's, they said it takes 7-10 days to call back for the appointment. The neurologist office called back and got me in for today(after I called constantly). Not really sure what he's going to do, do they do all the testing like the developmental pediatrician does or is he just going to look at the form the teacher filled out?

After talking to the lady at Cohen's and just going through the paperwork they already seem much more thorough.

Hoping we can wait for the Cohen's appointment, he's having a hard time in K

Re: Neurologist/adhd Questions

I don't have time to do this because I work FT during business hours, but I have heard ladies on here say if you call them constantly they may be able to get you in sooner on a cancellation.

I think the issue too in that location, is they are also seeing preemie newborns which I would suspect may take higher priority.

Cohen's is definitely worth the wait. Ask them when they schedule you to put you on the wait list so if someone cancels they can call you. Once you are seen once it is much easier to get appointments. I actually have all my appointments done through the doctor's secretary because he never has availability on the general schedule.
