Preemies, RSV vaccine?
Has anyone given their DC the rsv vaccine? My DS was approved to get it. He was 8 weeks premature. Just wanted to hear how your DC was after receiving it. Side effects?

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
My son is now 4. He was born at 33 weeks. He had the shot from October until either April or may. No side effects ever. And never got sick either. He was born at 4.11 and went home 10 days later at 4.10.
Congrats on your new little bundle!

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
wow, I didn't even know about this one.
Here's the maufacturers website with details on side effects: https://www.synagis.com/
I personally wouldn't give a preemie a vaccine requiring monthly doses but totally your decision.

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
My friend had a premie and he got the RSV vaccine. He did great on it and no side effects. A child getting RSV is very sad and to see a child in that much discomfort is heartbreaking! A premie getting RSV is EXTREMELY worse! Their lungs aren't mature enough to handle the illness.
Talk your concerns over with your doctor. They might be able to ease your fears.

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
I didn't even know there was an RSV vaccine. Is that only for preemies?

Re: Preemies, RSV vaccine?
My son is now 4 but was born 32 weeks. He received the shot for 2 winters bc he unfortunately got RSV 2 times prior to being approved for the shots
No side effects but the shots burn going in & bc my son was big, his dosage had to go in 2 legs

Re: Preemies, RSV vaccine?
My DD was born at 32 weeks, 5 days and weighed 3lbs 13 ounces. She got all of her vaccines - but I did wait until she reached 5lbs before starting any. I believe they told me these were the old guidelines and didn't pertain anymore - but I felt more comfortable that way. Definitely speak to your doc and the docs at the hospital. They wanted to give my daughter her first vaccine at 4lbs, 5 ounces - but I waited.
In terms of side effects - sometimes she would get cranky - but nothing serious.

Re: Preemies, RSV vaccine?
Just to clarify synagis is not actually a vaccine, it's a preventative medication. It's extremely expensive and hard to qualify - so yes only immune compromised children like preemies are covered. I was thrilled to get it for my 34 weekers. I know preemies who had RSV and were re admitted to the hospital. No side effects here! Good luck.

Yes, agree! It is not a vaccine but a medication that can help prevent or reduce the severity of RSV which can be life-threatening for premature infants.

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
Thanks everyone. I was just nervous reading about potential side effects. He was born July 10. So he is almost 4 months old ( 2 months adjusted). He spent 44 days in NICU. And I have a dd in kindergarten. So we qualifies for the vaccine. It won't prevent him from getting rsv but it will make the symptoms less severe. He is due to start this month and he he will get it for five months.

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
My twins were bron at 30 weeks so they got it every month from October until April I believe. No side effects at all. A preemie with full blown RSV is horrible and i was not about to take that chance.

I was about to explain this but you guys beat me to it!
My former micropreemie got Synagis last cold & flu season and had no negative reaction to the shots.

Yes..exactly. I believe its a few thousand dollars per shot, and they need the shots on a monthly basis during RSV season so its very expensive. Since RSV attacks the lungs, Preemies Lungs are very premature and weak, especially during the first year of life, so if I preemie gets RSV it will most likely hit a LOT worse then if a full term baby got RSV. My 30 week triplets all qualified for their first winter and one of my sons qualified for a second year. There was no side effects in any of my kids besides them hating it. We did not get sick at all their first winter.

It's about 2-3 thousand dollars a shot and needs to be given monthly during rsv season. Which is 5-6 months. Since it is so expensive the insurance companies have specific requirements in order to get approved. My DS was approved since he was born at 31 weeks 6 days, was on cpap and oxygen, and we have a child in kindergarten. The neonatal follow up doctors were adamant about having our ped push to get approval since rsv is very dangerous for a preemie.

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
My guy was born at 35 weeks. I wish I knew about this to fight for it. We battled RSV three times his first year and now have asthma diagnosis bc his "lungs are weak now." If you could get it, I would. A kid with RSV is no joke scary.

My 3 year old DS was born at 28 weeks and got it the first year. No side effects at all. It is very expensive per shot. We have a HDHP and it is over $2000 a shot. Dr wanted to give it to my son his second year, but we were not approved since he has no other medical conditions. He was so sick his 2nd winter. I say if you are approved, get it.

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
My twins were born at 32 weeks and in the NICU for 30 days. They got the RSV vaccine before they left the NICU and then every month with their last shot being in April. They had no side effects from it. when they turned 1 year they were both diagnosed with RSV. It was pretty scary. Thankfully they needed no hospital time because as soon as they started coughing i started them on the nebulizer. DS, now 4, was born with the lung issues and still has lung issues when he gets sick from being born premature. I wish I had fought harder to get them the vaccine the following winter after they were born.

Preemies, RSV vaccine?
my twins were only born 4 weeks early so we did not qualify but we should have had it - both my boys had breathing problems in their first year - and we controlled access to them that winter
I would get it - the nebulizer for little guys is hard and steroids are not great either
