How to keep the kitten out of the christmas tree?

Newbie kitten owner here. My DH put up the (fake) tree this weekend. It's not decorated yet. The cat went in the bottom branches a few times over the weekend. Then today, I couldn't find him and he was about 3/4 up the tree (!!) just lounging like it was no big deal. Obviously, gates don't work with cats like they do with my kids and dog, so are there any other tricks to keep them out? Squirt him with water every time I see him do it?

Haha! I do have a pic, but I didn't have my flash on, so it's really dark. You can only see the white fur around his eyes. He's gray and black striped so he blends in with everything dark. I can't even find him in the the tree half the time. I'm sure it will happen again!

How to keep the kitten out of the christmas tree?

Christmas tree is just a big temptation for cats.
My 10 year old will lay undrr it, pull and chew on the lighting wires and also pull ornaments off to play with them.
I leave the botton row off of my tree when I put it together and use only unbreakable ornaments on the bottom.

How to keep the kitten out of the christmas tree?

We put a baby gate around our tree when Candy was a puppy. But it was at age 3 that my 6 lb dog knocked over my whole Christmas tree, because someone was knocking at our back door while we were out, and she was trying to see them out the back window, we think.

When my pups were little we used gates.. with the kittens... we just made sure the tree was anchored to the wall with fishing line so they wouldn't topple it over. Only one had any interest ... I would squirt her with water when she started to climb... she ultimately resorted to just sitting under it on the tree skirt

The cats I have now don't climb the tree, but they do pull ornaments off and try to drink the water when they lay under it. My childhood cat used to love to climb and would literally leave everything alone and just sit in the tree. Cats have their own minds, they will do what they want lol. I agree with pps about unbreakable ornaments!
