Help!! Travel to Stony Brook
Hello All, Last month I made a post inquiring about which airport to fly into and how to get around for an interview at Stony Brook. I do appreciate all of your help and the advice was wonderful.
Unfortunately, my dates were never confirmed by the interviewer. After contacting him I was told that he had reservations because I'm out of state and he didn't know if I would stay in NY. Long story short, I now have dates that I can come up.
The problem is: the flights that were $211 are now $511- $740!!!!!!
I need a job, but no way am I paying that. Especially when I could have purchased a flight, hotel and a car for $500.
Now, my only option is to take Greyhound or decline the job.
I don't want to ride 2 days by bus, but I will. HOWEVER, the bus stops is at the mobil gas station at 700 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, NY. I called the store to inquire if there was car rental or taxi service near by and the guy had no idea. Do you guys know of anything in the area?
I can get to NY, but how to I proceed from there?

Help!! Travel to Stony Brook
Oh my! There is an Enterprise Car Rental on Vets Highway in Bohemia, which is only a few miles away. Have you looked into flights to JFK and maybe rent a car from there?

Help!! Travel to Stony Brook
Some members here told me that traffic is horrendous and it would be so much easier if I fly into Islip. But, I checked JFK anyway . Those flights are expensive too $401. I'm a new grad so I don't have a ton of money and this job doesn't reimburse travel. And too, I'm kind of in a "mood." When I was initially offered the position, I already had flight $211, hotel, $190, and rental $125. So, to now pay $401 for a flight is killing me! Lol

Where are you coming from?
I would think Amtrak would be better than Greyhound if that's an option.
Amtrak can get you into Penn Station (in Manhattan) & you can take the train out to Stony Brook.
I'd also look into the Bolt Bus if you're in the Northeast.https://www.boltbus.com/
There are plenty of taxis there: https://www.google.com/search?q=700+Motor+Parkway%2C+Hauppauge%2C+NY&oq=700+Motor+Parkway%2C+Hauppauge%2C+NY&aqs=chrome..69i57&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#q=700+Motor+Parkway%2C+Hauppauge%2C+NY+cabs

Re: Help!! Travel to Stony Brook
Can you ask him to book in January? Like right after the New Year?
December has to be the most expensive time to come in - both for flights & hotels.

Re: Help!! Travel to Stony Brook
If you can find an affordable flight you can fly into JFK, and take the train to Jamaica, then to Stony Brook! That's what I would do...

Re: Help!! Travel to Stony Brook
yes, this! If you can take Amtrak to Penn, and then the LIRR (which you can pick up in Penn Station) out to Stony Brook. The train station is a few minutes, a super short cab ride, from the campus. Then there is a hotel on campus now so you wouldnt really have to travel around or plan logistics all that much.

Thanks everyone for the input. I don't know anything about Amtrak I'll look into it. I'm currently in Georgia.

Don't companies usually pay your airfare if you're coming flying in to interview with them?

Re: Help!! Travel to Stony Brook
You can also look into flying into Newark, New Jersey if it's cheaper.
The Airtrain(~$10) is very easy to take to get to Penn Station & then it's a train ride ($25-35 if you buy the tickets before boarding)

Amtrak definitely goes from Atlanta (and a few other places in GA) to NY

Thanks all. I'll definitely take a look at Amtrak. Journey33, you're right. Most companies do pay travel. I was flown to Texas and Maryland, but this job doesn't pay for travel (salary isn't that great either!).

Can you ask for a phone interview first? Then if things go well, book an in-person interview. Remind them you are very interested in the job but since it was a last minute date the flights are crazy prices.

Not all. When I was interviewing in other cities very few would pay for expenses.

If it isn't great then is it worth taking the job?

Wow! Really? That's crazy to me, if a company is interested in you they should foot the bill for all travel related expenses to interview. DH has gone on so many out of state interviews and they always paid airfare, car, meals, hotel, etc. I thought that was pretty standard. Maybe it depends on what industry you're in.
OP............if you're able to figure out airfare to MacArthur that's your best bet. I live in Stony Brook, the airport is maybe 15 min from me. It's so easy flying into there too. Keep checking Southwest, they have some pretty decent airfares depending when you fly and your bags are free. Good luck with everything!!!
