Do you know anyone who used their stored cord blood?

I'm wondering if this is worth it. My Dr said it's up to us and I have a DC already that I did not do it with.
Do you know anyone who actually had to use it? I have a ton of mom friends and most did not do it.

Nope. There are only a very limited number of reasons cord blood could be used for your own child at this point. And many blood diseases, unfortunately, may already have been present in the cord blood, so it wouldn't be viable to use anyway.

This exactly and for that reason, I will not be saving/banking the cord blood.

Nope, no one. I have heard though of a few instances of parents conceiving a genetically matched child to 'save' another child.

My doctor actaully advised me against storing cord blood.

My Dr shrugged it off saying it's just an insurance policy. I think I'm going to do the delayed cord clamping bc I heard the baby gets more stem cells and benefit... God willing of course that we have a normal delivery.

This is what I plan to do.

No not personally but I recently read an article about a girl who had a brain tumor removed at 1 year old, on the way home from the hospital she had a massive stroke & lost function of one side of her body... she had a transfusion of her own stem cells from her cord blood & in several months, she was able to regain almost full use of that side of her body, whereas without it she would have been paralyzed for life. It was a very compelling interview & made me even more glad I banked ds's cord blood just in case.

I don't know, strokes are touch and go in every case and I know many of my patients who were told poor prognosis and miraculously beat the odds. Not bashing cord blood banking but I wish there was more research or confirmed benefit bc it's pretty pricey IMO. It was around in '06 when DS was born but so new that it was not readily used. 9 years later and still no confirmed benefit :/

The odds of your child using their cord blood are very, very low. The AAP estimated the odds at 1:200,000 in 2011. I do not know anyone who has a child that used their cord blood but my OB has a good friend that is alive today due to a donation to the public cord blood bank. If your hospital participates in the program you can donate for FREE. I donated my dd cord blood and it is banked for the use of anyone who is a match- you can read more about it on bethe match.org

No, I don't but I banked anyway. I would rather have it and not need it than the other way around. In fact, I hope I never need it.
Unfortunately, a dear friend of mine would likely be alive today if she had banked her cord blood. She received cells from a public bank and even though it was a match, she developed GvHD and ultimately died.

At least they have the stored cord blood for donation at hospitals. I never knew that and that's pretty awesome!

with my last pregnancy I remember my drs office had a sign that they had a cord blood collection fee they charged.... I figured between that and the storage fees we would pass... but now I am thinking on this one of donating it(and paying the dr fee) as it would be great if another baby could benefit from something I have available.
