thinking about moving to Suffolk
Not sure where to start. Work in Smithtown and family there and also in setauket, and Miller place.
Was thinking anywhere between hauppauge to Miller place?
Can you recommend towns/school districts?
We're in Levittown now and are two family

Holbrook is very nice. I know two friends with young children that just bought there.

Wading River is really nice. It has a rustic feel to it, close proximity to sound beaches, good schools.

Sayville, Commack, Setauket and Stonybrook. Be careful with Sachem(even Smithtown), they are going through a lot of changes right now. I would tend to go with a smaller, more stable district.

I don't think you can go wrong with north shore suffolk from northport to Miller place. Some districts are small, some are larger all depends on what you are looking for, your budget, and taxes.

I am originally from Levittown. Moved to an apartment in Ronkonkoma in 2008 and bought in Holbrook in 2012. I've been very happy here. We are part of the Sachem SD. Going back to Nassau to visit family is like going to the city for me.

I was raised in Bohemia (Connetquot Schools) and it was a really nice town. The taxes are a bit high though.
I am now in Holbrook (Sachem Schools) and love it.

Actually the planning of the closing of schools and moving them around has been nixed.

Yes but unfortunately there are many more issues. That was one of the smaller issues.

We are in Three Village (Setauket area) and love it. Also Miller Place, Commack and Rocky Point are great.

Some of the areas in Suffolk that I considered, and I base this mostly on the statistics reported on Newsday/School Districts, etc are:
Saint James
Nesconset
Smithtown
(The above three are Smithtown SD)
Commack
Setauket
Stony Brook
(The above two are the Three Village SD)
Port Jefferson (with Port Jefferson SD)
Miller Place
Mount Sinai
Manorville (Eastport/South Manor SD)
Mattituck (Mattituck/Cutchogue SD)
Northport (Northport/East Northport SD)
I chose Saint James for my family, in the top-rated Smithtown SD and I'm beyond proud to say that my son will be attending there, like his mother did.
I'll give you one example of the stats I look at on Newsday and then I'll give you the link to do your own research. I chose the above districts based on a lot of things but a big one was this:
Smithtown High School - East:
96.4% Graduation Percent
96% Regents Diploma Percent
65% ADVANCED Regents Diploma
Smithtown High School - West
97.3% Graduation Percent
96% Regents Diploma Percent
71% ADVANCED Regents Diploma
I only listed one district, as an example - you can look up the rest HERE:

Most of the districts I listed above, have almost the same kind of numbers or very similar. They are top performing districts and are consistent each year, regardless of if their population calls for the district to expand to additional buildings... For example, Smithtown at one point had one HS and they have since had to go to two HS buildings -- When I graduated, over 12 years ago, it was one, and for about ten years now it has been two. It has not changed the excellent percentage rates and how amazingly well the students are doing whatsoever - winning state awards, science awards, nationally recognized accomplishments, etc.
With over 65-70% of kids obtaining *Advanced* HS Diplomas and close to 98% of kids graduating and every single school in the district in consistent "Good Standing" rating from the State, I'm happy. I'm a product of the district and the reason my parents chose to send my siblings and I there was based on the same stats that I am talking about now.

ETA: I'm laughing because the link I provided goes by the name of the HS in the district so not all carry the same name as the district - so, I look at:
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School
And I'm like wowzer those are some great STATS! Excellent - which district is that? I look and it's Port Jefferson, one of the ones I listed  What a great performing district - kudos to those teachers and students!

I have been living there for 28 years, since I was about 3 - it has always been the same, I feel fairly confident to state that unless something crazy drastic happens, it will remain the way it has been since I was 3 - a great place to live, an outstanding district that rates very consistently high. As for the high schools, which is the only thing that has changed over the 28 or so years, like I had mentioned - at one point it was one central high school, and then it went back to two high schools -- aside from that one somewhat minor detail, that's it - very consistent. And that's just a building/geographical thing - it didn't have an effect on how well the district does AT ALL. Kids did great with one high school, kids do great with two high schools. Always rates around the same, MAYBE about a 1% +/- difference in either direction? That's about it... for as long as I or my dad has been checking, which is coming up on THIRTY years now  .
So, yeah, I can't see it changing anytime soon. I am also an avid participator in many town meetings, I pay attention to proposals for things that are being suggested for the town and district, etc. I also happen to have my New York State Real Estate Salesperson License. That being said, I would absolutely be aware of anything major having any REAL chance of happening in this area.
Is your RE trying to tell you "no don't go there!" or something? Sounds like he/she is trying to steer you one way or the other, which is actually exactly the opposite of what they teach you to do in school when you go to become a RE agent.
Like, I have my feelings but I would NEVER steer a client, if I was working with someone, one way or another. If someone said something to me about living someplace else over living in my town I'd be like no problem, don't want to live in Smithtown? Fine - go someplace else, we want people that want to live here and love it for what it is. I couldn't care less either way. But, why this RE agent would want to fear monger you into "THIS might happen in Smithtown!" is beyond me. Seems odd.
Well, either way, good luck in your hunt and go with your gut - choose something that works for you and your loved ones based on what matters to you and base your decisions on facts.

You can't go wrong in those areas. Its really more about finding what makes you feel at home.
I live in Smithtown, have a son in the elementary schools, have nothing but great things to say. Know kids who have recently graduated from HS West as well.
Other towns I would move to on North Shore, Commack, Northport, Kings Park, Hauppauge.
Yes the may go back down to one HS at some point. It will just depend on enrollment. Overall enrollment is down in Smithtown, and if they need to they will close HS (east, I believe) but this isnt the first time this has happened. The SD knows how to handle the shift with minimal disruption to the students. But this is still a ways off and it may or may not happen. Either way its a great district.
