New homeowners and STAR credit

How long after closing can you apply for the STAR credit? Is there a deadline for STAR credit i.e. April 1st or is it rolling?

Town of Brookhaven is March 1st, not sure where you are located or if there are different deadlines for each town.

You can apply right away after closing, we started grieving our taxes at contract also since that can take upwards of a year.

There are LOTS of scams out there!!!!! Make sure you check, double and triple ANY mail you get that LOOKS like its from the town or city.

The scammers make their correspondence look like its official. Its for property tax and star adjustments. You will also get something about a deed search..(or something like that) that looks VERY official.

Check ANY "official" looking mail and DONT SIGN anything that looks like its property tax or star adjustments.

Because of this I just went straight to the town website and printed it from there. I didn't get anything in the mail. Does the town normally do that?

i would call the town everyone is different. when I closed I had to wait to file for star cause you can only do it at certain times and at the time of closing i had to wait.

I would also suggest contacting the town. I'm sure there's a website with all the info. I'm town of Brookhaven and one of the things they require is a photocopy of deed which wasn't processed until 3 months after closing. I'll be in my home for 6 months and I'm just filing now but the deadline here is 3/1.
