when do new homeowners apply for the 2008 star?
We closed on our home in September, so I know we aren't eligible to receive a star rebate this year.
When and how do we apply for next year?

The application deadline is 3/1.
You need to go to town hall to the assessors office to apply. Make sure you have updated your drivers license with your new address (you can do that over the phone).

No, only one of you does. You just have to have the completed application and a copy of your new driver's license for both homeowners with the new address on it.
Also, the 3/1 deadline is for the town of brookhaven. Other townships have earlier deadlines, so you're better off checking with your town assessor's office to learn their deadline. They may have the application online for you.

I just checked my town's web site and it says we have to apply by Jan. 2.
It seems we can apply by mail, but I guess I'll call and ask just in case.

Town of Oyster Bay deadline is January 2. You need a copy of both licenses with new address, a copy of the deed and utility bills.
I already sent in for our new licenses, but they haven't cashed our checks yet.

We went in person, but didn't have too. All they said we needed was our licenses...which did not need to be updated with the new addresses!!!

You should have a copy from your paperwork at closing. They accepted that from us since they knew the town was still processing our closing paperwork since we closed less than 30 days before the deadline.

Wow. I just gave Smithtown one piece of paper from the closing and that was it. I signed for myself and my husband.
What a PITA to wait for the license! I haven't even done that yet.

Same here. I sent everything in to Town of Smithtown and called to confirm that it has been processed. very simple.

Your attorney should have given you a copy of the deed at your closing or after the closing with your closing statement. If you didn't I would call the attorney and ask for a copy of it.
every town is different though I was able to fax my application in. If you get it in by jan 2nd you will be eligible for 2008/2009 school tax period.

We didn't have our deed yet either so we gave them a copy of something else, which of course I forgot - maybe one of the other closing documents - title perhaps? they can look up the deed- they are the tax assessors office, lazy buttheads
we needed to have our licenses in our new address, but DH dropped it off himself - you can mail it, but the TOBrookhaven is inept and I didn't trust them receiving it.
