I don't know how people commute every day from Ronkonkoma.

I grew up in Sayville and lived at home when I first graduated, and it was draining for sure. I would look at Babylon.

Not sure of your budget but I love Brightwaters. It's in the Bay Shore school district. Beautiful area and on the Babylon train line for your DH.

ETA: I think the train ride on the Babylon line from Bay Shore to Penn is like 1hr.5 minutes..not too bad.

Babylon. For me to commute from LI to the city, the furthest east I would live is Babylon. I work in lower Manhattan too. Maybe I would be willing to live further if I worked right by Penn Station.

Where in the city does your DH work? And do you currently live in Suffolk? Only because some of your towns and the ones that people are recommending are very inconvenient to travel to Manhattan to on a daily basis. My DH did the commute from Ronkonkoma to lower Manhattan- an hour and 40 each way. And he only had to drive 5 minutes to the train station. But if he is already doing the commute and doesn't mind, then don't mind me!

Thanks for the suggestion! We currently live a little further east of Babylon, DH works in Midtown Manhattan. We've discussed it at length, DH is used to the hour and 20 minute commute as it is. I've left it up to him as far as how east we'd go. Maybe he should test out commuting from Ronkonkoma one day and see what it's like.

The commute from Ronkonkoma train station to midtown is 2 hours door to door on a good day. I've done it in the past and would avoid it all costs. 20 hours wasted a week.

Love Brightwaters! Minimal inventory but great area. leave out of the Babylon train station instead of Bay Shore. (quick drive for better parking). It is a much shorter commute into the city than Ronkonkama.

Unfortunately Brightwaters is out of our budget. I actually grew up in Bay Shore and had friends that lived there, it's a beautiful area!

I'm not sure if you have children yet, or if your husband works a straight 9to5 or not but my husband works in Midtown Manhattan and we live in W. Islip I would not go any further east then here. He works a lot of hours when it's busy season but during the regular times he takes a 6:27 out of Penn and doesn't get in the door until 7:50. It's hard because we don't get a lot of family time during the week because the kids are getting ready for bed when he is getting home. Chat Icon

Not sure of your budget but there are a few houses under $400K in Brightwaters right now. One is even listed at $334K. I would keep your eyes open for a good deal in Brightwaters or the surrounding area in Bay Shore. I agree with the other poster that IMO for your DH going any farther east is going to take a toll on him.

My parents have been commuting from Bay Shore for 15 years and even that has taken its toll on them. Good luck!

Thanks, we'll have to take a look!

Thanks for all the input everyone. It's excellent, and has given a lot to discuss.

We are currently further east than Bay Shore. DH has been doing the commute for eight years. It's frustrating at times, but we've gotten used to it and have developed a routine around it. We have a three-year-old DS. We've discussed it at length, and this is really the area (and surrounding) we want to be. I think DH should do the commute from Ronkonkoma for a couple of days before we start looking more seriously, just so he has a better idea of what it would be like, but I've left it up to him since it's his commute (mine is currently a 15 minute drive).

Again, I think there is a lot we have considered and not considered and I appreciate all of the input. It has given us a lot to think about. Chat Icon

Not sure what size/style house you are looking for. I am going to be listing my house next week. We have a cute 3 bedroom/2 bathroom ranch in Bay Shore. Feel free to FM me if you would like more info.

Either way--We love the SD! I'm not sure if you have researched but Bay Shore started full day UPK this year. They still offer 1 or 2 1/2 day classes as well.
