Aetna Infertility Program

Hey! Just wondering if anyone knows anything about Aetna's Infertility Program.

DH just got new insurance and it only covers IUI and testing. However, when I called they said I could fill out forms for their Infertility Program. I filled them out and sent them over, however, the few people I spoke to there have yet to give me a clear answer as to how it works.

TIA!! Chat Icon

Aetna Infertility Program

I had Aetna last year and had to register with their infertility program in order for them to cover anything. Not sure if it's the same plan but I also only had coverage for testing and IUI's.

I had Aetna for like 3 months before switching back to United Healthcare. Reason why I switched was I have secondary IF and only option is IVF and they wouldn't cover it. I

Sure they will, but you have to call for approval.
They ask how long you are trying, about past pregnancies, etc. I def was covered for my FET & cycle (though I had s natural pregnancy inbetween my 2 ivf cycles).

Aetna Infertility Program

Thanks everyone. My insurance alone only covers IUI and testing however I was told if I joined their Infertility Program which is for all Aetna plans, could cover additional services based on results of testing, past pregnancies, length of time trying, etc. However, when I call they say yes you are in program however can't tell me if any additional services were approved. Ugh..gotta love health insurance!! Thanks all!

I know I called the Infertility Program and they wouldn't approve it. This was when I first started treatment in 2011. Soon as they denied it I switched back to UHC which was a dream and approved IVF and has 30k allowance opposed to 10k.

Re: Aetna Infertility Program

Aetna is terrible! I have it, and it covers IUI and meds. BUT, the issue is, once you're accepted into the program, you still need to get pre-auth for everything. So on day 3, of your cycle, let's say you need to start meds. You need those authorized before the RE's office can order them for you. So on day 1, I would call my RE's pre-auth dept and she'd get that started so that on day 3 I could have my meds delivered. In actuality, I couldn't get the meds turned around that fast, especially for my first cycle. So I used donated meds for my first cycle. I think my meds arrived cd6. Then for my 2nd cycle, I had leftover meds that I used to get me through until my new meds were delivered. Luckily, IUI #2 worked and that was it. It's annoying, but the RE offices are familiar with Aetna and know how to get it authorized as quickly as possible.

Aetna Infertility Program

That sounds ridic! wow...thankfully I kept my insurance for myself and I guess will use my husbands as secondary for now. I have a high deductible plan, have to cover $2,500 (but 25k for infertility procedures) and was hoping to use his BUT obviously not the case. I have a long history so IUI is out of the question and would have to do IVF or FET. Thanks for the info!!

I've used both plans (Aetna & UHC) for both of my cycles (for one, I switched so I could get an extra 5K, for one, my workplace forced an insurance change as they dropped Aetna). I believe I was primary the first time & secondary the second (because I had a natural pregnancy in-between). The change in what was covered was pretty significant over the 6 years between my cycles (co-pays, anesthesia, yearly vs lifetime limits).

I think the big difference in what the plan will & will not cover is based on your work-place negotiations with the company. Our workplace gives us a form with what exactly will & will not be covered (diagnostics, IVF, IUI, ICSI) & limits.

OP: Call your RE's financial department and ask specifics with your situation & your medical plan. Also, you may be able to use Flex-spending to put $ pre-tax that you can use towards your health care deductible. To me, this made a big difference.

Re: Aetna Infertility Program

I have Aetna, my plan covers 3 IUIs and 2 IVF cycles lifetime.

When I first consulted with the RE I had to register with the Aetna infertility program. About 3 weeks later they contacted me with what coverage I was eligible for and my authorization number. I could then make the RE appt.

After the initial contact I gave the office (North Shore) my authorization number and they obtained permission for me before each procedure. All I had to do was make my appointments and pay my deductibles.

The only time I had to contact Aetna again was after my 4th IUI. Because my husbands company is CT based, CT state requires 6 IUIs before insurance can cover IVF. But Aetna only covers 3. So after my 4th I had to call Aetna to get the 5th & 6th waved. They only waved it because I had a myomectomy before starting any treatment so the chance if success with IUI was lower.

We had our first IVF covered but since they only pay for 2 lifetime and they consider a freeze cycle an IVF cycle, even though it's much cheaper, we elected to pay our freeze OOP. That cycle worked and I'm 3 weeks from holding my baby girl. So now if we have to do it again for #2 we still have coverage for 1 IVF cycle.

I have Aetna and have unlimited coverage with testing etc and 10k for IVF. Everything else is covered at no cost no copay. It depends on your company and the plan they choose
