I had Nick the Balloonatic at DD's 1st birthday party. There were about 12 kids, ages 5 months-12 years and they all loved him. Even the adults thought he was amazing!

I did a balloon artist and it was a huge hit with both adults and kids. I also had them set up a small table and I bought foam craft kits from Michaels. even adults were making them.

my best friend didn't have entertainment at her christening but she had two kids tables filled with stuff to keep kids occupied. Things like coloring books, glow sticks, lollipops, sticker scene pages, small play dough containers. It was plenty for kids. No entertainment needed.

This is exactly what I did. I provided a basket of items for all ages as well as other items to keep the kids busy. It worked out for us at both of our kid's christenings.

Re: need ideas to keep large groups of kids busy at a party
I had a clown for an hour, but since it was a 4 hour long party, I also had two seperate tables with crafts. I ordered a lot of stuff from Oriental Trading and the rest was from the dollar store. I had things like foam stickers and construction paper, bowls of Fruit Loops and pipe cleaners to make edible bracelets, coloring books and crayons, play doh, etc...

i should see if my bf has any pics of the kids table! I know for sure, she had these things called wiki sticks- they are like wax sticks that you bend and mold. It was the coolest thing ever! And there were these sticker pages.. she bought all these items through amazon. i even took a few packs of wiki stixx home b.c i like having them when we go to restaurants to keep kids occupied. she had glow sticks in the shapes of wands for the girls and i think swords for the boys. She had coloring pages and crayons.
To be honest, it was plenty. If you have entertainment, it is a nice touch but really i remember going to parties as a kid and not having much to keep me occupied. I try to keep things old school when i do my own parties. i will look for the link on amazon for examples. even look on oriental trading co for ideas... it will save you lots of money from hiring someone.

Re: need ideas to keep large groups of kids busy at a party
amazon link
things like the glow sticks/wands etc are found at dollar store
you can also get the small party favor size play dough anywhere, amazon, toys r us, party fair. they usually coming in a bag of 15 or 20. playdough
sticker scenes
these are just a few examples. good luck!
eta- she had two kids tables and each table had one or two baskets filled with all these items. the table was also decorated with a lollipop topiary ( she found the idea on pinterest) and it was great.
the older kids ended up sitting and eating at the kid table, and the younger ones did both- sat for crafts and things and ate with parents.
